What does democracy mean to you? Why is a healthy democracy important?
Alyson Wert: Democracy means that our governmental bodies and legislation reflect the will of the people for this to take place. It also means that democracy is a responsibility that we all shoulder in different ways. If the will of the people is that their voices be heard, those representing them are responsible to use their elevated positions to remove any barrier so that all voices are heard at the polls. If the will of the people is that some folks want to run for an elected position. Our governmental bodies are responsible for putting legislation and safeguards in place to avoid anyone from interfering with that process. A healthy democracy is important so that the ongoing issues people face can be heard and addressed.
