Sara Seflek: Hi, my name is Sara and I'm a senior at El Cerrito High School.
Please state which college you will attend and what you will major in.
Sara Seflek: I will be attending UCLA starting this fall and I will be majoring in electrical engineering.
What is one thing you are most proud of accomplishing this past year?
Sara Seflek: I think one of the things I'm most proud of accomplishing this past year has been navigating the college application process as a first generation student. It was definitely difficult, especially since I didn't have parental guidance that students typically have. But I was able to pull through and see the results of my work and make my family proud. And I think another thing I'm also very proud of accomplishing was my summer internship at Berkeley National Lab last summer.
What are you most looking forward to next year in college?
Sara Seflek: One of the things I'm most looking forward to as I start college this year is meeting a ton of new people, whether that be people from very different backgrounds than me or very similar backgrounds. I'm looking forward to finding my community within the student body. I'm also looking forward to joining the Bruin Formula racing team and being a part of a collaborative and passionate team of engineers.
How does this scholarship help you progress towards your academic goals?
Sara Seflek: As a first generation college student from a family of lower income, this scholarship provides me with the financial support necessary to pursue the education my family immigrated here for, without worrying about the burden of student debt. It also allows me to fully focus on my studies and take advantage of all of the amazing opportunities at UCLA such as extracurriculars, internships and research without worrying about how to fund my education. It also provides me with a sense of encouragement by receiving this scholarship, recognizing my hard work and dedication, I feel motivated to continue striving for academic excellence.
Is there anything you want to say to your scholarship donor and/or the Ed Fund?
Sara Seflek: I'd like to sincerely thank my scholarship donor and the Ed Fund for providing me with this generous scholarship and helping both me and my family in fulfilling my dream of attending UCLA. I'm really excited to be attending a four year university and I could not have done it without the support from the Ed Fund family.
