Speaker: Sonia Abdel-Fattah

Introduce yourself and tell us about your co-op this semester.

Sonia Abdel-Fattah: Hello, my name is Sonia Abdel Fattah, and I'm currently in my spring semester internship for architecture. Um, I am working at Nau and his architects in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and a little bit about the work that I do is I assist the project managers and architects with a variety of projects related to architecture and interior design, whether that be model making, helping to set up in design presentations, creating interior elevations using revvit. Um, or updating schedules and other information using Excel. Um, so I'm able to help each project manager with different tasks they need, and it's a variety of tasks.

While on co-op, what is a project that you've been a part of that has inspired you?

Sonia Abdel-Fattah: So back in the beginning of my co op, I helped to create a site model for a project that's about a year into. Um, this project really resonated with me because I really love hands-on projects and making physical models. Um, I think that it was a nice reminder of the certain niche that I really like, and that is model making. Um, I was also able to use cork as the base, which I've never used that material before. It's always been chipboard. So it was nice to see how different materials can have a different impact on the look and the emotion that the site model gives. It was also really nice to be able to see the client's reaction during the meeting to this site model. For the meeting presentation, I was actually able to use my camera that I have because I love photography and take pictures of the site model. Um, and so that was really, really nice too, because eventually I'd love to be able to merge photography and design into maybe hopefully my own business. Um, so those are two things that I really love doing, and, um, so it was a great project to work on.

What have you learned that you will use in your career?

Sonia Abdel-Fattah: So so far during this coop experience, I have learned a lot of things that I will be able to use in my future career. Um, one of them being the 3D software Revvit. Um, you can also do 2D drawings on this, but it has been essential to every single project in the office. So whether it be for model making, for renderings, um, or what I've done is making interior elevation drawings. So using the floor plans given and then making elevations out of that. Um, it has been really vital to learn because not only have I learned how to use Revvit, but also how to properly set up a page to send up the clients, the spacing, the formatting, things like that. So that has been really, really important. Um, I did know InDesign before coming into this co op, but I have learned a lot more about the different tools and skill sets regarding InDesign when making presentations. So that'll definitely help with making um, Making presentations more efficient in the future. Um, and then also Excel, I have used that before in the past, not a lot, but I've used that more now and again, just the formatting and organization of information, specifically product information and schedules.
