Where did you complete your winter externship? (firm + city)
Cullen Whelan: My externship took place in Washington D.C. at Hartman-Cox Architects.
What was a highlight from your time there?
Cullen Whelan: When I was at Hartman-Cox, I was lucky enough to go on site at a couple of their projects, which was very exciting to see project types I had no previous professional experience in, and in a city that was also very new for me as well.
In what ways do you see this experience influencing your education and career path?
Cullen Whelan: There are just very limited opportunities and time frames to gain professional experience while in school, and to actually see the level of coordination required for a project to move from paper to site. At this point in my education, every experience in professional practice is valuable, and it's a good reminder of how limited the perspective of academic architecture can be.
