Speaker: Portia Ncube
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background?
Portia Ncube : Hi there. The name is Portia Ncube. I've been doing live in care for the last 18 years. I've worked with clients of all ages with learning disability, mental health, child offenders and adult offenders. I've also worked as a probation service officer In 2020 I decided to concentrate on live in care with adults only. I came here as a refugee and a lot of people helped me. So in return, I thought I'd give back to the community as well. When I was growing up, I used to be a girl guide and in church, And we used to go to houses, and help the elderly in their houses by cleaning and cooking for them during Christmas periods. So when I got here, I found out that I can turn that into a profession.
Portia Ncube : I'm originally from Zimbabwe. I came here year 2000. I have two Children that are raised as a single parent. The first born has flown the nest and the second born my son is in university now. I started counselling at Salford University of Salford, and I've done health and social care as well.
How long have you been working as a carer and what motivated you to become a carer?
Portia Ncube : I've been doing care for the last 18 years. During the Covid, I started concentrating only on the elderly. What motivated me to do this is that when I was back home, I used to attend church and I was also a girl guide. So during Christmas season, we used to go to old people's homes and clean, cook. So when I got here, I realised that I could turn this into a profession. And also I got here year 2000 as a refugee. A lot of people helped me and those people were volunteering. So I thought, this is very nice of them. Once I get my papers, I will also give them back to the community, and I got the privilege to do that.
What hobbies and interests do you have?
Portia Ncube : Because of my age. My hobbies have changed. I now enjoy just sitting at home watching Netflix, watching cooking videos on YouTube, barbecuing with my family and friends, holidays, travelling.
