Why an essay assessment?
Professor Justin: William Zinsser, the author of the classic book On Writing. Well, has said that writing is how we think our way into a subject and make it our own. Hi, I'm Professor Justin McGeary with Trinity House Tutorials. And I think that what Zinsser is saying is absolutely crucial: that writing is how we think, and writing and thinking are absolutely important and central to any type of learning. And one of the most important things when it comes to improving one's writing, particularly essay writing, is to get good feedback and lots of it. And this is often a challenge for highly motivated, high achieving homeschool high schoolers. Often it's hard to get lots of feedback. And sometimes parents feel that they don't have the expertise to give students the type of criticism, feedback, encouragement that they need to improve substantially their essay, writing, their thinking. And that's where I come in. As a professor, I have taught essay writing, and I have graded and assessed hundreds of essays. And right now I'm offering free essay feedback.
What is involved in the assessment?
Professor Justin: The 1st 25 students to sign up, will get a free one-on-one 15 minute call with me and we'll talk about one of their essays. We'll talk about the structure, the argument, the style. We'll talk about strengths and weaknesses and they will come away with some concrete next steps for how to improve their essay writing.
