Hey, I'm Annie from Go Smart, and I've had the pleasure of listening to a test pressing of Ali Palmer's new album, Take Me to the Water, thanks to the wonderful crew from Suitcase Records. Take Me to the Water is the 2nd album from the Byron-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and you can hear the Northern Rivers in its DNA through the album's lyrical and musical connection to place and natural environment. The record sits comfortably between folk and soul, with hints of jazz and gospel adding depth and dynamic to the songs. It's easy to imagine it was written in the sunshine with the ocean wafting gently on the breeze. Ali's connection to water and its power is undeniable, making for a fitting album title and a transportive listening experience. One of my favourite tracks is Old Friend, which to me sounds like the start of a beach road trip with your best mates, and it's a perfect fit at the top end of the album. Halfway through, we get to a powerful swell and a change is coming soon, which makes space for I wish and never stop loving you, the tender love songs that follow. There's a lot to love about taking me to the water, so I recommend submerging yourself in it from start to finish. Recommended for those who like Little Joy, she and him, and Norah Jones.
