Hello, my name is Dr. Charles Charman and I'm the Medical Director for the Sound Compass Program. I've been with Sound since 2011, and one of the main reasons is our commitment to strong investments in our people. The Compass program is an excellent example of those investments. As you probably know, the program is open to third-year residents who've demonstrated an aptitude and have some experience in medical leadership. You have to have accepted a clinical position with Sound, of course. Our program is built around monthly virtual meetings where we explore a key Sound value or initiative. We'll talk about the "why" behind it and then how to bring your leadership skills to bear in supporting the initiative and ways to demonstrate its value to your site. Our goal with Compass is to get you thinking about what it means to be a physician leader in the clinical setting and also within the organization. Many of our Compass graduates have gone on leadership positions. One other requirement of the program is that members collaborate on a group project during their time in Compass. This video, actually, is a collaborative effort of the class of 2023. So take a second and let's listen to them discuss why they chose Sound, why they chose the Compass Program, and what it means to them. I hope you enjoy hearing from them. I chose Sound Physicians mostly because of location. I knew I wanted to work close to home and I knew the hospital. All hospitalists were employed by Sound Physicians and once I started learning more about Sound Physicians and what they had to offer, I discovered the Compass Program. I would be able to learn more, get to meet people who were the same stage as I was, and possibly also have similar goals. And I am glad that I did apply. I think with the help of the Compass Program, we are trying to become a role model for the people around us. I think I see Compass as a program where you can get your administration and leadership skills during that year period. Looking at the structure of this one year long program on how to hone leadership skills for people that are truly interested in that pathway was extremely intriguing to me. And I feel like this is a great opportunity for young leaders to enter a stage of their career where they can take it to the next level with the right guidance. I think that's what Compass provides and that's what basically attracted me to the program. Advice I would have for current R3s would be, don't be afraid to ask questions. That's how you get to know a program and learn more about them and whether it is the right fit for you or not. If you know you're interested in leadership, to explore that particular pathway, I think it's a great idea to look into the Compass Program and explore what they have to offer. I highly recommend you to participate and apply for the Sound Physicians Compass Program. I wish you best of luck. Good luck with your career!
