Speaker: John, Northumbria Police

When did you first hear about Serve and Protect Credit Union and why did you join?

John: I first started saving with the credit union when I joined Northumbria police as a civilian. I can't remember how long ago it was. I mean, I've been retired now for quite a number of years, but, I started using it as a saving scheme really. I've never actually borrowed any money from the [credit] union, but, I have a standing order which I pay into on a monthly basis. This has helped me, to put money aside for holidays, I've purchased cars over the, over the time I've been a member. And I jokingly, with my family, refer to it as my funeral fund. But I'm quite happy with, the treatment I've had. It's easy to access. I now have it on my phone, of course. But when I started, I didn't because you weren't doing that sort of thing. But, I'm very pleased I joined.

How has the credit union helped you?

John: As I said before in the previous clip, I've used the credit union to finance a number of different items such as putting money towards holidays, purchasing cars, et cetera. And I continue to do so. So, not not more I can add to that really. As I said before, I have never used it to borrow money, but, I found it's very good for savings, and I'm quite happy with the way things are going.

What is the best thing about being part of the credit union?

John: The best things for me about the credit union are that I know my money is safe. It's not one of these organisations that's suddenly going to be taken over by the big boys. And it's nice to know that I can borrow money if I need to. Fortunately I'm in a situation at the moment, although I'm retired, I can manage and hopefully I won't really need to go down that road. But I will continue to save and use it as I feel appropriate. So, as I said before, I'm delighted that I made the choice of joining the credit union.
