Speaker: Caitlin Quigley, Head of Health-System Partnerships and Engagement, RxTechExam
Caitlin Quigley: Some of the most valuable lessons I learned came from asking questions, also seeking feedback and learning from the people around me.
How did you get started as pharmacy tech?
Caitlin Quigley: Hi. Honestly, I didn't originally set out to become a pharmacy technician. I always knew I wanted a career where I could help people, but I wasn't exactly sure what that would look like. I started working in the hospital cafeteria, and then later became an endoscopy technician. Eventually, I was encouraged to look into a pharmacy technician training program, and that opportunity completely changed my life. What started as a new opportunity quickly became a career. Over the past 10 years, I've had a chance to grow through a variety of pharmacy roles, and along the way, I discovered a passion for technician advancement, leadership, and education. Looking back, that one suggestion to explore pharmacy opened a door I never could have imagined, and ultimately led me to where I am today.
What has helped you advance into your current role?
Caitlin Quigley: For me, advancement came from a combination of continuous learning, professional involvement, and being willing to step out of my comfort zone. I always tried to keep learning, whether it was through certifications, continuing education. Leadership programs or simply asking questions. I don't think there's ever a point where you're going to know everything. And some of the biggest opportunities in my career came from being curious and wanting to learn more. Getting involved with organizations like your state national state Society or the National Society, also played a huge role in my growth. Those experiences allowed me to build relationships, learn from others, and see opportunities I may have. Not seen otherwise. Most importantly, I learned to say yes to opportunities, even when they felt a little intimidating. Looking back, many of those experiences that helped me advance started with simply getting involved and being willing to take on something new.
What advice would you give to someone entering the pharmacy technician field?
Caitlin Quigley: What advice could I give? My biggest piece of advice would be to stay curious and get involved. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Pharmacy is consistently changing, and nobody expects you to know everything right away. Some of the most valuable lessons I learned came from asking questions, also seeking feedback and learning from the people around me. I would also encourage technicians to look beyond their day to day responsibilities, join a professional organization, attend a conference, pursue certifications, volunteer for projects, and take advantage of any opportunities to grow. You never know which experience, connection, or opportunity might change the course of your career. Most importantly, believe in yourself. Pharmacy technicians play a critical role in patient care and healthcare operations. There are more opportunities in this profession than ever, and your career can be whatever you make of it.
