Speaker: Alexia Leclercq

Tell us about yourself! What is your name & where are you from? What organization are you connected with/what do you do?

Alexia Leclercq: Hi everyone. My name is Alexia and I'm from Austin, Texas. I'm an environmental justice organizer. I work with a local grassroots organization called Poder, to fight some of the injustices, including a toxic tank farm, pollution from aggregate mining operations, the lack of access to clean and affordable water, and I'm also the co founder of Start Empowerment. We are a social environmental justice education nonprofit. We work at the intersection of education and grassroots organizing. We work with community centers and youth and public schools, to implement environmental justice education and programming and get youth involved and plugged in organizing and empowered to create change and tackle the climate crisis.

Why are you excited for the Riley's Way Youth Leadership Retreat?

Alexia Leclercq: I am so, so excited to meet all of y'all at Riley's Way's Youth Leadership Retreat. I'm so excited to be in such a beautiful space with such amazing young leaders and to build community and think about the ways we can care for each other and for Mother Earth and fight for environmental justice.

What is your workshop about? Why should people attend?

Alexia Leclercq: My workshop, titled Imagining Environmental Justice in the 21st Century, is going to be a beautiful activity, where we're gonna get to imagine what environmental justice looks like, and then ways to make that a reality through grassroots organizing. I can't wait for this amazing exercise that incorporates arts and organizing tactics and campaign management, and for us to see what amazing ideas we come up with an amazing futures that we build.
