Reiss-Davis Continuing Education is honored to host Randye Semple, a leading scholar and trainer in the field of mindfulness-based therapies in mental health care. Dr. Semple is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California. Research has shown Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Children to be effective in three broad areas. The first is in anxiety management and reduction of anxiety. The second is in management of emotions or emotion self-regulation, we call it. And the third is an improvement in attention and reductions in attention related problems. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for children was developed initially for Children ages 8 to 13 years old. It has been used with adolescents and it has been used with children with slightly younger than eight years old. But that's the general age range for which MBCT-C is suited. As far as the broad population, pretty much any child can be appropriate for MBCT-C. We have a few contraindications. For example, if a child is acutely psychotic, we don't recommend MBCT-C. But for the most part, MBCT-C is a child-friendly intervention and can be used in many different settings.
