Speaker: julia joseph, ICU Travel Nurse
What was going on in your life and career that made you want to join NLCA?
julia joseph: Hi, my name is Julia, and I decided to become a nurse life coach after 10 years at the bedside. Um, I'm an ICU nurse and I worked ICU pre-COVID and during COVID and now post-COVID, and I just have been feeling really burned out. I feel the sense of dread when I have to go to the hospital. I feel anxiety about it. And it's not that I can't do the job. I absolutely can do the job and I do love it a lot of the time. But it's just not feeling as fulfilling. I feel like a lot of my values are not lining up with modern day healthcare, and I feel like my patients aren't getting the best care that they need because we're not looking at them as a whole. So I feel like nurse life coaching is my way to help people outside of the hospital and to bring myself better life satisfaction as a nurse.
What made you say yes to becoming a nurse coach?
julia joseph: Honestly, I didn't even really have to think about it. I just said yes to becoming a nurse life coach, the second that I found this program, because the program looked like it was structured so beautifully, so professionally. Um, I actually was really drawn to the program, to Laura and Shelby, because of their nursing background. As an ICU nurse, I knew that an ER nurse and a former ICU nurse knew my life. They knew my struggles, they knew my professional background. And if they had had similar experiences to me and they loved what they were doing, I just knew it would be a natural fit for me going forward.
What has changed for you since certification?
julia joseph: So I'm halfway through the certification process. I'm not quite all the way there yet. But what has changed for me since being in this course is I've become a better listener. I've become much more intentional with my words. I've become a better powerful question asker. Um, and I've really, I've always been really good at thinking outside the box and bringing new perspectives to conversations, but I'm learning how to do that and empower other people at the same time. And that just feels really good. So a lot has changed. Um, I've taken it into my personal life, I've taken it into my professional life, and um I would say overall, the biggest theme would be intention.
What are you most proud of?
julia joseph: I'm the most proud of just saying yes and going for it, and I'm constantly looking to level up. I'm constantly looking for more education and more training and to add more skills to my skill set. So I think what I'm most proud of is giving myself the permission to do that and to grow and to learn and just become a better nurse and a better person.
