Speaker: Jennifer Justus , RN
Jennifer Justus : considering joining the nurse life coach Academy, I would say go for it. What's stopping you? Just do it.
What was going on in your life and career that made you want to join NLCA?
Jennifer Justus : 10 months ago, I was working as a manager in a critical access hospital, running 4 busy units. I was married to my job, working 7 days a week, answering phone calls at 3 o'clock in the morning, taking shifts in the middle of the night to help with staffing, accommodating everybody but myself. And it got to a point where I had literally become my job. There was really nothing else in my life that I could commit to other than working all the time, and it got to the point where I felt like there needed to be something else. Um, there's a lot of managerial stuff that really got in the way of me being able to serve the staff in the way that I wanted to. And I was ready for a change. And so I took a really big leap and a really huge chance and took a step back in my career and decided to go back to the bedside. And during that time, I really started to explore what I wanted out of my nursing career, out of my life, and out of my future, and how I wanted to serve people and In that search, I found the Nurse Life Coach Academy, and it gave me an opportunity to serve people in a different way. Uh, my biggest motto with my staff was I want everybody to live their best life, and if this isn't the place, then go do it where it can be. And this coaching really gives me an opportunity to serve people in that way. It gives me an opportunity to help them. Shape their dreams and envision anything and everything that's possible and break down barriers to get them there. It's also given me the opportunity to break down my own barriers and explore my own personal wants and needs and where I want my life to be in the next year. 2 years, 5 years, and really open up the possibilities of what that could be for myself, and that's where I was and this is where I hope to be going.
What made you say yes to becoming a nurse coach?
Jennifer Justus : One of the things that I really enjoyed about my leadership and management role was staff engagement and development. I wanted to spend all of my time working with the staff, helping them pursue their dreams, develop their careers, and live their best well-balanced lives. Unfortunately, there were a lot of other things that really got in the way of that, and I felt like staff development was always the last thing on my list and something I had the least amount of time for. When I found nurse coaching, I found that that's all nurse coaching is, is working with clients, helping them pursue their dreams, break through barriers, change limiting beliefs, and develop a life that they've always dreamed of. And so that is what I found really appealing about. This role is just being able to give somebody else undivided attention, listen, be open, be curious, and just explore new ways of thinking, new strategies to live their lives, and pursue all the dreams they wish to achieve.
What has changed for you since certification?
Jennifer Justus : Since starting this certification process, many different things in my life has changed. Um, I have broken down several of my own limiting beliefs, pushed past barriers that I never thought that I would push past, explored new ideas, new ways of thinking. I've spent time and made connections with people in ways I didn't think I was going to. I met a new community of people that are very like-minded. They think the same, they have the same energy that I do. They're pursuing their dreams. They want to help other people pursue their dreams. It's been very exciting for me to make those connections and reach out to other people. It's been very powerful for me to break through my own limiting beliefs and step into my own discomfort. Uh, it's also given me a lot of freedom and it's helped me create more of a vision of what my life could look like a year from now, 2 years from now, 5 years from now.
What are you most proud of?
Jennifer Justus : Through this experience, what I am the most proud of is my ability to lean into discomfort. There have been many different things that this program has presented me with that have made me very uncomfortable, that have made me think I don't really want to do that, um, and I am proud of the fact that I have not. Postponed or delayed. I have faced every barrier or discomfort, and I have leaned into it, pushed through it, and redrew the line in the sand for myself of what's possible.
