Speaker: Catherine Milglionico, RN
What was going on in your life and career that made you want to join NLCA?
Catherine Milglionico: Hi there. Um my name is uh Kat and I joined Nice Nurse Life Coach Academy because I wanted to make a difference um in a field I've been in 33+ years. Uh, it isn't what it used to be. It isn't what we worked so hard for in the 90. used to be. It seems like it's changed and not for the better. Nurses are stressed out. People need help in many ways. Stress causes illness, and uh I would like to help people prevent from being burnt out and making themselves sick. From their career choices are being stuck. I just really feel this is a great segue for me as I head into retirement and leave the bedside. I'd still want to help people. I still think I have something to offer. So as a more senior nurse, I just joined it because I just love helping others. And I don't wanna give it up. I don't wanna give it up until my last day. Um, I just value what we do. I value the impact we have on our communities. And I want to make a difference, and I want to make that dash in between those two dates. I want to make a difference, and I think this is my segue to make that difference.
What made you say yes to becoming a nurse coach?
Catherine Milglionico: What made me say yes to being a nurse life coach? Well, it was Lauren Shelby. I've listened to their podcast for probably a year before I joined, um, and reached out to them. I love the way they coach. They're genuine, they're real. They make a difference, um, about the way they ask questions, the way they teach, the way their podcast goes. Um, it's, it, it's honest, it's rare, it's honest. Um, I've listened to some others and I just didn't get that vibe from them. And, um, I really made me wanna think about this a little bit more. I knew I wanted to do something different. I knew I wanted to, uh, explore, but their approach and everything just really helped me. Look at a different way of nursing. I've looked into legal nurse consulting. I've looked at remote nursing, um, and everything else. And I just feel like this segue is the way to go to help others. Um, I believe that's, that's why I joined it. Um, and just to be, if worst case scenario, the worst, the most, the least I'll get out of it is I will grow as a human being from taking this course and being coached and coaching others. I just think, um, It's kind of like a teacher, you know, the, you get more of it sometimes in your students do. I think as a coach, sometimes you get more out of this, um, and sometimes the coach he does, uh, and that just that mutual growth there going on. And, um, I believe I'm with, uh, the right people who um really got me excited about something I haven't been excited about, and I just feel like it's so natural for me. Um, to be making this move. It just, I feel like it was made for me. Um, so that's why I chose nurse life coach.
What has changed for you since certification?
Catherine Milglionico: Huh, when it's changed, um, I'm excited again. I am excited about nursing, taking in a different direction. I'm excited to help others. I have learned how to ask open-ended questions, um, better than ever. I kind of do as, as being, um, an emergency nurse background, kind of ask those open-ended questions. But I think now I'm listening deeper, um, mostly just listening deeper and just helping others and just finding out that, wow, this is, this is really cool. Um, I don't have to be ultra smart. I just have to learn how to ask questions, ask them in a way that uh gets the person to open up, my coaches to open up and just learn, um. From what they say and just having those different levels of listening, um. That's big. Uh, we are in a busy, loud, very loud world, and, uh, we really don't listen very well anymore. Um, it's funny cause we have two ears and one mouth, but yet, we struggle with listening. And I think for me, listening deeper than I've ever listened to anyone before, uh, being able to ask questions from that listening deeply, uh, being 100% there, not being distracted, uh, by the next thing. I just, I think that's what that's done for me. I'm really, really, um, just in love with this program and just in love with what I'm doing right now and it's been a long time since I've been there.
What are you most proud of?
Catherine Milglionico: I am most proud of getting this done, um, getting ahead of the game. Surprised that people want to coach me or have me coach them. Um, that has blown my mind, um, that, uh, I accidentally ended up with 8 pro bono clients. I was thinking I was gonna have to go off the list offered by the, uh, school and or the academy, and no, I have people trickling in and I am Humbled and blessed by this. I I care and I'm glad people see that I care. So that is probably what I'm most proud of, that people see my heart and know that I'm a person who cares and really wants to help people get past wherever they're stuck. And um I'm also proud of the fact that I'm listening better than ever. Um, it, it's opened up so much to me. Uh, this whole program has just opened up so much to me. I've always been a person pretty secure in what I do and who I am. Um, just because I had to, I had to fight my way to be where I am today, um. So, I really am humbled and crowd and scared and all those things that people are reaching out to me for me to coach them. Uh, just because I have been a genuine person and really care about people and have touched lives as a nurse, and people around me have seen that, and they trust me in that. So I think that, that's what I'm most proud of right now, is just being able to do that and just to really listen, just sit there and, and hear what they have to say, hear the questions that they answer. And learning to be quiet. Lauren was right. Laura was right. Silence is golden, and I am learning it and just loving it.
What would you say to a nurse considering joining Nurse Life Coach Academy?
Catherine Milglionico: If you're considering this program, then I would say, why aren't you doing this program? Just go for it. The program has a lot of hands-on experience for you in the coaching labs where you can learn how to coach. Watch from some of the best coaches I think are out there with Shelby and Laura and some of the leaders that they have. Each one of them has their own way of coaching. And it's very interesting, yet you can learn a lot from them. A lot of it's the same, but it's a little different. They all have their different twist on it. So I think it's an excellent program with a hands-on. Um, when I've looked at other programs, they didn't have that hands-on where you could get on in a big group and, and, and watch some coaching going on. And learn from it and it was like you take somebody in your peer group, in your peers that will volunteer to coach in front of all of us, and we learn from that. And then we break off in our own groups and talk and coach each other and you learn a lot from that because no two people are like. What I especially like is it's always a safe container. You can always be coached. Uh, I, I can remember the first time that um I really saw somebody who was struggling with someone was getting coached uh by Laura, I believe, and You could really see the change in her demeanor, her face. It was just like, all the stress and all of a sudden she just glowed. It was like, oh, I got this. And that is so cool to see, um, under, uh, under that kind of environment. I also like that the fact that we can contact um the leaders of the this academy and Um, ask questions and they get back to us and they have a way that if it's an immediate question, they can get back to us. They have resources for us to use to help us coach and help our coaches pro bono, um, it's not as hard as you might think it is, and they have, they, they walk us through it. I really think this is a great program because coaching is all about being hands on. It's all about being curious, listening. And having your clients have the aha moment. So I would highly recommend if you're curious about it. Go for this program. It's amazing. I, I love it. I am going to be recommending it for years to come. I like how I am supported a year from now, um, I have access to this, and I hope they keep that going and just our hearts are genuine and in this crazy world and sometimes the, the art of being quiet is something amazing to see, and I really enjoy learning about that. I learn about the different levels of listening and I just want to help people. And keep in mind there are different avenues you can do this. You can hang out your own shingle. You can work at a hospital, you can work in a corporation. There's so many ways that you can help people. And this is a great program to learn how to do that and just, just look, look for your niche and it might take a while, um, my, my understanding it takes a couple of years, but just be open and ready to learn and open up and just learn how to coach and This program is awesome. I just love it. I just really feel like I've found where I should have been a long time ago, but timing is everything. And evidently it's right now that I, uh, I'm learning to be a coach, and I just absolutely love it, love the program I'm in. I don't feel a lot of stress about the program. It's a little nervous sometimes when the, when you first start. But really, it's, it's Pretty cool. It's pretty cool what you learn and you feel so supported. And you're not alone. You're, you're never alone in this, and I just can't say enough about this program that go for it, sign the dot, go for it, spend the money, it's worth it.
