Speakers: Cathy River, Owner, NF Technician, Madison Brain Center

Who are you and who do you help?

Cathy River: I'm Cathy River, a neurofeedback technician with the Madison Brain Center in Madison Wisconsin. We work with a variety of clients from infants to our oldest client who is 95 years old. Our clients come to us with a variety of issues from peak performance anxiety, post traumatic stress behavior issues, ADD, ADHD Traumatic brain injuries, post stroke recovery, chemo brain and sibling rivalries. We were looking for a comprehensive neurofeedback session system that offered technical support, continuing education, evaluation tools, and a way to provide QEEGs that were outstanding without having to be experts at reading them. After careful and time-consuming research, multiple conversations with various neurofeedback companies, and other neurofeedback clinicians. We chose NewMind, basically because every provider who was using them raved about them about the owners and everyone in the company. The whole tech department were awesome and had more than one person, which believe me comes in very handy. They also had a team of code designers who were committed to keeping the software up to date and state of the art. Pricing was affordable and tiered. The ability to provide cognitive performance testing was a big plus. And the fact that we could right away buy the QEEG Web Course and started our training right away and not have to spend thousands of dollars in travel or wait until the next course was offering was a big plus, especially over the holidays because we think we bought ours right around Thanksgiving. The three times a week Lunch and Learns that they have one of them of course, is a Dinner and Learn at six, my time, Central time. Was, and is, has been epic over the last five years, so we really love it.

What problem were you trying to solve when you found NewMind, and what made you choose NewMind over anything else?

Cathy River: We spent a lot of time researching different neurofeedback systems because we didn't want to have to be experts. We wanted to use the experts to help us grow and to help us become experts as we did our clinical work. And so we were looking for a comprehensive system with a lot of technical support, continuing education, evaluating tools and a way to provide QEEGs that were outstanding without having, like I say, the experts in reading them. After careful and time consuming research and talking with different companies and with different providers who use different peoples different companies softwares. We decided on NewMind because of the comprehensive wraparound services they offered to our office. That was the whole tech department were epic, there was more than one, which is a big thing to consider. Their coding group were separate which is also really good because you know, tech department had a problem they could talk to the coding people, versus everybody doing one person or two people doing everything, and we really like that. We liked that they had a team in the back office, it was very helpful with everything. The continuing education that they offer. They record everything; it's online on Youtube videos. The lunch and learns that they have, we're really glad they have those. We could go back and look at those and some of those we did look at before we bought just to see. We were like just so excited that we could buy the web based course for learning neurofeedback to train ourselves, go even deeper in our training and start right away and not have to wait until the next course was offered. And since we were buying our software around Thanksgiving, that was really really important, because that's when their sales were and we didn't want to have to wait until January or February to take a course. They have a tiered system, so you could buy at the level of use and upgrade if you needed to, and we really like that. The Lunch and Learns again are spectacular way to keep your ongoing education. Plus you get to interact with other providers and different neurofeedback providers and the team in the office come up with different subjects. And again, like I said, they're all on the web, the facebook videos so that that was really great.

What type of successes have you achieved with NewMind, and how has NewMind's Home Training benefited your clinic and your clients?

Cathy River: In our office, I would say 95% or more of our clients report really big reductions in their symptomology. Lives and families are changing for the better. Clients have stopped participating in their own betrayal. They're getting better grades. Their focus and attention is better. Their relationships with families, friends and acquaintances are really a lot better. Sleep gets better. Anxiety is way down and my clients tend to use their tools. They've accumulated their years of attempting to problem solve whatever their dysregulation is and they haven't been using those tools and all of a sudden, they just elegantly start using them. We find that most of our clients stop participating in their own betrayal, which is really awesome. They love it. We use the home user system and we have a lot of clients that do that. We have grandparents that will get it for their grandkids in different cities. Sometimes these kids come to us when they're visiting and do their QEEGs sometimes people in the cities do them. There are people that have kids that it's really hard to drive across town or we have students that are on the bus system, so it becomes a really good thing to use. And we're very pleased with the technical support, the three way calls to get better technical support if my clients need it. It's very, very user friendly and we love it. Our clients love it and we have a lot of fun. We do allow our clients to come into the office if they're driving by and do a session since they can hook themselves up if they are in town or it works for them. We sell our units in a two month payment plan and then we sell packages of sessions. Some people, some providers I know just rent them out for a couple of months. But we really promote that this is a good piece of equipment to keep in your life for the rest of your life and, you know, do touch ups sessions every once in a while and our clients report they love doing that. Sometimes it's every year, especially if they've ever had surgery again or go through like having babies or something. They really like be able to do a little bit of neurofeedback to reboot the system for their brain.

What benefits do you get from NewMind Lunch and Learns, and how have they helped you grow as a clinician?

Cathy River: The Lunch and Learns. I just love, I love the fact that some of my staff can watch them with me. I love the fact that they're very interactive. All of them are on Youtube videos after they're done. We can look at past videos even from a couple of years ago. The interaction between the clinicians and the staff and special guests is so great. There's many clinicians that do neurofeedback that have other parts to their practice, like their natural paths or their chiropractors and they have a lot of wisdom and knowledge and other tools that they use along with their neurofeedback. So they will be guest speakers and do presentations and there's there's two at noon at one at six and I think that I'm, I'm in Wisconsin. So I guess it's, I watch those, the nighttime ones and they're really, really great. I just can't say enough about the lunch and learns and when you get into the Lunch and Learns, you also are available to get in on like an email link with other providers who joined. So you people ask questions, but people also present information. I know that Richard and people put out a lot of different science news articles on neurofeedback. So I'm always continually getting more information that makes me a better provider, that helps my office become better, anybody who wants to upgrade and look at things. It's just stellar. It's so wonderful. I can't even talk enough about it. Just look on the list and see

How would you describe what NewMind is, to a colleague, and why would you recommend it to them?

Cathy River: NewMind neurofeedback is a full service neurofeedback delivery system from the back office to my office and I love it because at any point I can be where I am as a practitioner and clinician and grow with the help of a full service staff and great equipment that's kept up to date. One of the interesting things in the neurofeedback field when you go and research it is a lot of companies and providers talk about how there's is the only one and theirs is the best. And I've been doing neurofeedback since about 2007 and you really learn that every system has its pluses and minuses. And what I like about the NewMind system and the team is they bring other clinicians in that have other systems even to talk about it or to talk about neurofeedback and the brain and what's going on. So you really, education is key and delivery of services and the attention that everyone pays with technical support is invaluable, especially if sometimes you feel like a clueless, I don't know, there's like you don't even know what you're doing with the technical stuff and they just treat you with profound respect and it's so nice. It's so wonderful to just, you know, not know or make a mistake and not have somebody be irritated with you or and I the NewMind system from the cognitive tests that you can buy to use with your clients. You can have a multitude of different types of clients. And we're going, we're going into doing neurofeedback with hopefully businesses and that have their own clients that they're gonna send to us. Or we're going to go to their offices and work with and we just look so professional with all the tools, all the handouts that are available to us to use.
