Speaker: Fred Burke, Director, Baruch College
What is your motivation for and why are you applying to serve on the NACE Board of Directors?
Fred Burke: Yeah. Hello, my name is Fred Burke and I'm so excited to share my interest to apply to the board of directors. I had the opportunity to serve on the N A board from 2017 to 2019. And it was such an amazing opportunity to be part of the leadership of our association. At the time on the board, we were thinking about who we were and where we wanted to go. And since rolling off the board in 2019, I'm so impressed with the good work NA has done with the current strategic plan as well as the Den I Statement, which is woven throughout all the fabric of N in every part of our association. As you can see from my application. I'm quite involved with N A. I've served on a variety of committees as a chair or co-chair or just a committee member, anything from being on the conference committee to co-chair in the conference, to working on member ambassador, to figure out why people were not renewing their N A membership and how they would maybe returned to NAS uh to working on honors and awards and also working the Principals Committee I'm currently on a na career coaching faculty and really enjoy the touch point of working with professionals that want to leverage career coaching to be better when they serve students and also welcoming people to our profession that don't have a background in higher education or career services that come out of industry that want some common language to better serve students in a coaching capacity. I've also given back a lot to n in the way of mentorship, I thoroughly enjoy and from a very genuine, authentic interest, helping new professionals become familiar with career service and helping them succeed. I have enjoyed my NA mentees so much. I was thrilled in 2019 to be awarded the na mentor of the year. And so many of my former mentees wrote beautiful letters to NA to support my nomination and I do this in a formal but informal way. So I think it's very important as we think about who we are, how we get more people involved in the profession and who they look up to as the future of the association. I'm a first generation college student. I went to a, an R A conference when I was a sophomore in college called, wow, I can do this for a living and I learned about higher education and student affairs and I pivoted myself to think about how I can get into higher education as I graduated undergrad, I started my career at Miami of Ohio and uh the Midwest at a large public university and then went from Miami of Ohio to corporate hr where I did campus recruiting for 25 schools in 15 states, jumped back into higher education at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York at a small private liberalized college when then went to HOF University, which is a large private university. And then I've been at the City University of New York the past 11 years working in the MS MB, a career center uh which has been a really rewarding career to return back to where I'm from working with many first generation students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and helping them be successful. Having worked with both undergrad and graduate students is very rewarding. And I just think how grateful I am to have the opportunity to serve in this role in my, in my role as director at Baruch, not only to help the students at Baruch, but also cuny wide. I want to thank you for looking at the application and watching this video. Thank you.
