Speaker: Alicia Monroe, Assistant Director and Adjunct Faculty, Rowan University
What do you find most rewarding about the work you do?
Alicia Monroe: What I most appreciate about the work I do every day is working with students,
Alicia Monroe: I do every day is working with students, or on behalf of students, with students as a collaboration with faculty, employers, and staff for the benefit of students, because for me it's all about the students and their student success. What's important is is that students see their own potential. And they are able to navigate through their interest to really appreciate, explore, and discover all opportunities that are out there so that they can fulfill their dreams and achieve. The most rewarding part of the work is actually seeing the students smile and getting that hug when they cross the stage during commencement exercises. And then hearing their story as they tell you about the impact that you had on their life. So for me, it's ALL about the students.
Professionally speaking, what do you consider to be your most significant achievement so far? Where do you believe you’ve made a difference?
Alicia Monroe: My most significant achievement
Alicia Monroe: My most significant achievement rests in the same vein of how I started. It's about students. I have one particular student in mind and when she and I first connected she identified with several disabilities, risk factors in her family, poverty. And I can go on. The point I'm making is that her profile- it's not unlike the profile of several students on our campuses that come before us for help every day. So to know that this student moved from being on academic probation to graduating with honors in a short period of time, to now being matriculated in a grad program at our university, feeling esteemed and confident that she will achieve. That is the significance. of the work that I do every day.
