Speaker: Adam Bufka, Director, Center for Career Advancement, Purdue Global
What is your leadership style and how do you use that to create a positive work culture?
Adam Bufka: As a leader, I take a transformational leadership approach, focusing on empowering my team in ways that are meaningful to each individual. I recognize that motivation and growth aren't one size fits all. So I take the time to understand each person's strengths, goals, and what drives them. From there, I tailor my support to help them to succeed while encouraging new ideas and creating space for innovation. I work to inspire through a clear vision and consistent energy, making sure my team understands not just what we're doing, but why it matters. Developing my staff is a priority, and I'm intentional about connecting them to opportunities that build their skills and move them forward in their careers. At the same time, I believe transformational leadership requires me to walk the talk. I hold myself accountable to the same expectations I set, showing up with consistency, follow through, and integrity. By leading this way, I aim to create a positive, engaging work culture where people feel motivated and confident in the impact they're making.
What do you look for in future leaders and how do you inspire them?
Adam Bufka: When I think about future leaders, I look for people who take ownership, stay curious, and are willing to grow. The ones who stand out are those who not only focus on their own success, but also support and elevate the people around them. Adaptability is key. Being open to feedback, trying new approaches, and stepping outside of one's comfort zone can prepare you for future leadership opportunities. I inspire my team by connecting our work to a clear purpose and leading by example. I hold myself to the same standards I expect from others, showing consistency, accountability, and follow through. As a leader, I take a transformational approach, focusing on bringing out the best in each individual. I know development isn't one size fits all, so I take the time to understand what motivates each person and where they want to go. At the end of the day, my goal is to build an environment where people feel empowered, supported, and confident stepping into leadership themselves.
