Speaker: Kim Kavalsky, Interim Assistant Director, Health Promotion & Wellness
What led you to pursue a career in Student Affairs?
Kim Kavalsky: I've always been fascinated by people and their stories, which led me to get a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling. So I did not initially set out to work in higher education, but an opportunity came up several years ago for mental health outreach. So I could combine my clinical skills and program directly with students. Um Turns out it was a really good fit for me. I've been here now. 11 years. Absolutely. Love what I get to do.
What is the most rewarding part of the work you do?
Kim Kavalsky: Hands down. The most rewarding part of this job is working with students. I love the energy of the college campus and I really thrive when I connect with students. Um There's always something new happening, changes happening on campus, new people to meet so that energy has sustained me.
Is there a quote you can share that is especially meaningful to you as it relates to your work?
Kim Kavalsky: The quote be who you needed when you were younger has always resonated with me and continues to guide my work. Um Working in mental health outreach, I get to interact with students all over campus, connecting them to resources. It's important that they see me as kind, approachable and knowledgeable. Um Another kind of part of my job is communicating that message that seeking help is a sign of strength.
If you could give a piece of advice to someone who was newly entering a career in student affairs, what would it be?
Kim Kavalsky: My biggest piece of advice would be to serve on committees, volunteer for opportunities to network with colleagues, both in student affairs and in academic affairs. Um One of my mentors really instilled that in me, the importance of creating and nurturing relationships. And I definitely think that has contributed to the success I have experienced in student affairs.
