Speaker: Rod Holmes, Program Coordinator, Student Leadership & Community Engagement

What led you to pursue a career in Student Affairs?

Rod Holmes: What brought me into student affairs was the opportunity to take my past experiences and give them to students so they can learn more about themselves, leadership, the college experience and for them to be successful. That's one of the main things.

What is the most rewarding part of the work you do?

Rod Holmes: When I engage with students to get their insight, to get their experience, their learned experiences both coming from where they're from, bringing them to college. And me being able to engage with them in so many different topics and be able to learn their perspectives and they respectfully get mine and we can share and we can openly engage and discuss anything we want to in order for them to grow. To me, that's one of the best feelings in the world to be able to really kinda learn and grow off of each other.

Is there a quote you can share that is especially meaningful to you as it relates to your work?

Rod Holmes: One of my most memorable quotes that someone told me was that "there's always worth in doing good work."

If you could give a piece of advice to someone who was newly entering a career in student affairs, what would it be?

Rod Holmes: One piece of advice, be authentic, be true to yourself, be transparent so that my students and others on campus and with within your profession can see it and be able to learn and grow off of your good example.
