Speaker: Amy DeCoursey

What is your name and your current job/career? (Feel free to include specific tasks, responsibilities, etc.)

Amy DeCoursey: Hello. My name is Amy and I am a massage therapist. I have my own business here in the johnson County area and I work as a massage therapist like I said. Um I see clients um generally 2 to 5 clients per day. Um I work about 15 to 20 hours per week hands on. Um And then the rest of my week is spent contacting clients, um washing laundry, cleaning up, scheduling appointments, um doing all the things that manage my business.

What type of lifestyle does your job allow you to have? (work nights, family flexible, vacation, etc.)

Amy DeCoursey: So the type of lifestyle this career affords me. Um I pretty much set my own schedule which is really nice. I decide what time I go to work every day. I see clients at the time that you know are convenient for them but also work with my schedule. Like I said I work anywhere from 2 to 5 clients per day. So that could be a two hour work day or it could be a five hour work day. Um I take vacations whenever I want. Um That doesn't mean I'm on vacation all the time but it does mean that when I want time off I just schedule it and then I go and um I take every other weekend off I choose to work every other weekend. Um But then I take every other weekend off. I choose not to work in the evening. Um There's a lot of people in my industry who do want to work in the evening but that's up to me.

What advice do you have for the younger generation as they start to consider what career/job path they will take in their future?

Amy DeCoursey: So what advice do I have for the younger generation? Um I actually went to college. I have a four year business degree that I got from washburn University in Topeka. I spent the 1st 10 years of my career working in sales and store management. And after 10 years I figured out that that was not what I was made for. So I actually went back to school and I went to a trade school um to learn massage therapy so that I could be independently employed. And the advice that I would give you is follow your guiding compass. Um listen to what you really want to do and don't be afraid to follow your own path. Um And that may mean going to a trade school, it may mean going to college. It may mean a master's degree or a doctorate. It may mean no college or after school at all. Um, but just follow what really speaks to you and make that the career that you want.
