What impact did your symptoms have on your daily life before you tried ModifyHealth?

Katie: So before ModifyHealth, I'm like a little different than like the typically advertised ModifyHealth customer because I already knew a lot of my food sensitivities. I had been diagnosed with celiac disease, which means I can't eat gluten and then on top of the gluten issue, I also have some other food sensitivities. And so because of that, I can't eat out anywhere and like on my college campus there's absolutely nowhere I can eat out except for my own kitchen, which means that I have to do a lot of cooking. I have to cook every single meal, which is not always practical as a college student when you're busy and you have lots to do, especially when you're not feeling well. And so a lot of times I like would either make a really like fast peanut butter sandwich or I just wouldn't eat and I would have a lot of issues managing my symptoms and losing weight. But what's been really great with ModifyHealth is I've been able to have a safe meal that is healthy and it's really great. That's only a minute and 30 seconds away, like I just have to put it in the microwave and it's delicious and it's healthy and it is something that doesn't have gluten and I don't have to worry about it. Which is really, really great. a lot of times before I had this option when there was an event, I would just rather not eat or I wouldn't go to the event because I didn't want to not have food where everyone else was eating and now I just bring a ModifyHealth meal it's no big deal. So that's been really great as well.

What difference has ModifyHealth made in your quality of life?

Katie: ModifyHealth has made it easier for me to eat three meals a day. And that sounds like such an easy thing, but when you have food sensitivities, it can become quite challenging to make sure that you're getting enough food. And so with ModifyHealth, I can just put a meal in the microwave and I don't have to cook it, I don't have to worry about it and it's easy and it's safe and it's healthy and so that's helped me a lot with maintaining my weight and making sure that I'm able to get food. And it's also really great when I'm in a situation that I can't cook or I'm at an event where everyone else has food, I just pop ModifyHealth meal into the microwave and I'm ready to go. So that's really helped not having to cook every single meal, it's a lot more relaxing. When I don't have time to cook, I just ModifyHealth meal which is really great. I've been eating ModifyHealth meals for about eight months and sometimes I just use the ModifyHealth meals to kind of supplement my regular cooking. So I eat like two or three or four a week. And sometimes I just need ModifyHealth meals the whole week because I'm so busy and that's been great. And I think it's also really great because when I'm stressed out, my stomach symptoms are worse just because of the stress. But what's really great is the ModifyHealth meals are a little more gentle because they're Low FODMAP. And so my symptoms don't get as bad as they used to during a stressful week, which is really amazing. That's been really exciting.

What advice would you give to someone who is struggling with health issues and might be considering ModifyHealth?

Katie: I think if you're struggling with food sensitivities and health issues, whether you know what the food sensitivities are, you don't think ModifyHealth is a great thing to try. I've tried other food services, but what's so great about ModifyHealth is they're free of so many different food sensitivities. So like I can't have gluten or garbanzo beans or onions or dairy and none of the meals, some of them have dairy, but most of them don't have dairy, which is great. So I think it's such a worthy thing to try because I mean like the worst thing you miss out on is a little bit of money for one week of meals. but I think you're going to like the meals. The first time I ordered them, I ordered one of each different protein type, so I could kind of see the different offerings and I thought that was a really great idea. I really love the salmon meals, those are my absolute favorite. And the chicken meals are really great. I'm not a big beef person and so I don't really like the beef ones, I'm definitely stick with what you're interested in. I remember when I started the ModifyHealth meals, I was like, I don't know if I want to buy these because the Low FODMAP restriction. I didn't know if it was going to make the meals weird, but actually the meals are great. Like I don't feel restricted when I'm eating them. I've actually found new foods that I didn't realize I liked, like bell peppers, I hadn't really eaten before, and I love those kabocha squash is like super cool, and I love that, so definitely worth a try. I've liked them more than other meal services I've tried, it's way, way better than frozen meals, the meat quality is really good and the vegetables and it's just so nice. So I definitely would recommend trying.

Is there any additional information you would like to share about your story?

Katie: Before ModifyHealth. I was sick for about three years and then I was diagnosed with celiac disease and then I struggled to manage my celiac symptoms and manage my celiac treatment. But with ModifyHealth, it's definitely become easier because of the meals. And I know before this I tried elimination diets, I had met with the dietitian and I was like, oh no, I don't know if I want to do another elimination diet. I know if you're here, you're probably exhausted. You've probably tried so many things and it's hard, but I wanted to give you, like, a little pep talk to hang in there because this might be the thing that really changes it. It's definitely not the same like elimination diets that I've done before. The food is good. You don't, I don't really feel restricted when I'm eating it, which is nice and it's a lot easier to manage than a lot of the other elimination diets I've tried before. And the wonderful thing about Low FODMAP is generally, you're just limiting it for a little while and then you get to reintroduce food. So I think it's really exciting to try and I think it's worth it, even though it might be a little scary at first. I think it's definitely something worth trying.
