Speaker: Deb Peters, Speaker of the House of Delegates
Deb Peters: Hello, I'm Deb Peters, Speaker of the House of Delegates for the Michigan Dental Association. Welcome to the fall edition of your Delegate Digest - my communication tool with you to deliver bite size bits of information.
Deb Peters: I wanna begin by emphasizing the importance for the names of delegates and alternates to be submitted by December 1st. Why? Communication and appointments to House of Delegates committees. It's always our goal to have informed members of the house. And it's absolutely a fabulous opportunity to serve in the governance of our association as well.
Deb Peters: This past Friday, the MDA celebrated the life of former executive director, Miss Karen Burgess. I invite you to make a generous contribution to the foundation's newly established fund named in her memory. It is the foundation's hope that this fund become the single largest dental school scholarship offered by the organization. You see, Karen had a special interest in dental education and welcoming new graduates into organized dentistry. One of her first assignments at the ADA was as the director of the ADA's New Dentist Committee, which is how I first met Karen when I was the chair for the MDA's New Dentist Committee. This new fund is a fitting tribute to her leadership and to her memory to learn more. Visit foundation dot Michigan dental dot org.
Deb Peters: As I record this video, it's a beautiful fall day though. It certainly feels more like summer. Yet the signs of fall are evident. The colors are changing. Pumpkin spice everything and cooler evenings are upon us. One of the signs that I often notice is the gathering of geese. Well, actually I usually hear them before I see them. This reminded me of a short story called Lessons from Geese. And I'd like to share one piece of that lesson. You see it is known that geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up the speed. So what is our lesson? We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others is the quality of the honking we seek.
Deb Peters: I wanna thank you, members of the House of Delegates, for flying in this formation of tripartite membership. Please continue to lend your voice to advocate for our profession and for the people we serve. Take care.
