Speaker: Samar Hussaini

Introduce yourself and show us what you made in the Sculptural Embroidery course (or show us what you have made since taking the course).

Samar Hussaini: Hi, Meredith. My name is Samar Husseini and I'm a mixed media artist living in the US just outside of New York City. I just finished your sculptural embroidery class and I really enjoyed it. I've created several freehand embroidery pieces and they're all based off of Palestinian Tatreez, which is handmade cross stitch embroidery. You can see here. The Palestinian Tatreez is usually passed down from generation to generation and it symbolizes regional identity. So some of the motifs that I used are pieces like this one which is based off of the tree of Life. And um there's also this piece that I created, which is also based off of the Tree of Life. I did another version that I will be incorporating into my artwork that is based off of a floral motif. And um and I did a really large, several large pieces as well that were very challenging, but a lot of fun to create. As you can see, I'm really grateful I just wanted to let you know, for having the opportunity to take your course. It really was educational and it was so professionally made and really fun as well. And I wanted to thank you for sharing your technique with us and really helping me make my vision come to life. Thanks so much Meredith,

Why did you join the Sculptural Embroidery course and what did you get out of the course?

Samar Hussaini: I joined the sculptural embroidery course because I wanted to create contemporized freehand machine embroidery that was based on Palestinian Tatreez motifs, which then I could incorporate into my artwork. And I really got so much out of your course, especially a more detailed direction on how to create those designs and make them come to life.

What was your favourite thing about the Sculptural Embroidery course?

Samar Hussaini: So what my favorite thing about the course was everything, everything from the way it was made, how it was professional. I really enjoyed the projects that were created, how everything was so detailed and, and everything was step by step. I just loved everything about it. I couldn't even say that there was one thing that I liked more about it because I enjoyed the entire course.

What would you say to someone who was considering taking this course in the future?

Samar Hussaini: So what would I say to someone who is considering taking the course in the future? I would tell them to definitely take it because it is well made and you learn so much. And if you have any thoughts about learning more about freehand machine, embroidery, this is really a great course to take from Meredith.
