Speaker: Lesley Howells

Introduce yourself and show us what you made in the Sculptural Embroidery course.

Lesley Howells : Hi. My name is Leslie and I made some amazing things in this course, it was so wonderful. She taught us how to make ribs and scribble sheets. So I made this seed head and you could use her such techniques to make something really different, which I really enjoyed. And she also showed us how to make this beautiful flower bowls. And I turned mine into a poppy seed head, but it was all based on the techniques that she taught us. She also taught us how to make these wonderful skeleton leaves, which I was so super proud of. And it encouraged me to create my final design, which was. I wanna make like a dress with a bodice that is covered in beautiful leaves. So I made one and I finished one and this is my first panel and this panel will go on top of the bodice that I make to create my beautiful autumn dress. Thank you so much.

Why did you join the Sculptural Embroidery course and what did you get out of the course?

Lesley Howells : I joined the course because I'd used soluble fabric in the past, but it never really turned out that well. And I was never really that happy, but I knew that I was doing something wrong. I just didn't know what. So I joined to gain sort of an insight on how to use the fabric. The course itself lays out everything so easily. Everything is in step by step, everything is guiding you through how to use this fabric and how to understand how this fabric works so that all the stitching and all the way that you think and design with the fabric is actually supported all the way through the course. So I did learn how I am certainly not getting the best of it at the moment. But how I could really take advantage of all the properties with the fabric, which was explained so beautifully.

What was your favourite thing about the Sculptural Embroidery course?

Lesley Howells : My favorite parts of the course were the step by step instructions, the way that Meredith explains everything in such detail, but also in a way that is inspiring so that she is so generous, she shares a whole process with how she goes about her embroideries and how you can achieve such amazing things. And I think seeing how it was done and seeing all the beautiful work on the Facebook group is one of the best bits of the about the course is the fact that it's such an inspiring and such a supportive environment that you really feel like you want to try this and you want to have a go and I might never stop.

What would you say to someone who was considering taking this course in the future?

Lesley Howells : To anyone considering this course, I would honestly say to go for it. I think that if you want to learn how to use the fabric from the basics right up to even more detailed designs, you will definitely learn that. If you want to get more out of the fabric because like me, you simply weren't getting the results you wanted, it will teach you all that and it is the way that it is, is structured, is all about nurturing, but also about learning about your machine learning about how the process works. It teaches you so much. I would say to anyone that you will get an amazing amount of wonderful embroideries and wonderful ideas and designs and inspiration from this course. You really need to take it.
