Speaker: Engineering for Sustainable Development
Tell us a bit about your volunteer work.
Engineering for Sustainable Development: Hello, we are the representatives of Engineering for Sustainable Development or short for ESD. ESD is a student club that connects, educates and empower students through sustainable engineering practices. And so everything that we do, it's built on 1 of these 3 pillars, connect, educate and empower. So, an example of a project we run that focuses on empowering people is the Eco-Bricks project, which is a project to repurpose unrecyclable soft plastics to build a planter on the university campus. So, this focuses on keeping plastic out of the landfill, bringing people together and raising awareness about the amount of plastic we use on our day-to-day basis. Another project we're currently working on which is focused on the connect pillar is the Community project. Its goal is to empower students into using their engineering degree to work on problems other communities face. Currently, we're working on a community which is facing a water problem.
How will the MAS Here for Good scholarship help you?
Engineering for Sustainable Development: ESD is a relatively new club and therefore, we have very limited funding and through the MAS scholarship, this will allow us to run more engaging and more impactful events such as the Community project. As this funding will allow us to fund more sustainable materials and have professionals to help with the project.
What makes MAS different from other insurance and investment providers?
Engineering for Sustainable Development: I think what makes MAS different from other insurance and investment providers. I think the first thing is how involved they are in the university and life like student life experience. I know MAS is involved with many student clubs and they've run really exciting events. So I know they did speed interviews one time which I was part of and I know they also did like a handball and netball competition, which was really, really cool. So, I think it just makes it very accessible for students to get some tips on investment and how to manage your money. Another thing is I believe MAS aligns, MAS values aligns really well with ESD values. Like an example is the responsible investment which doesn't invest on fossil fuels. So, yeah, definitely think that MAS is really, really good.
