What is your name and role at MAS?
John Brans: Hi, I'm John Brans and I'm part of the Business Risk team here at MAS.
How long have you been at MAS?
John Brans: I started with MAS in 2021 when the new look Business Risk team was established.
What roles have you had prior to working at MAS?
John Brans: Having travelled overseas in the late 90s, I returned to Zimbabwe, my country of birth and began working as an agricultural commodity broker. In 2001 I moved to New Zealand having met a Kiwi overseas. I worked for the New Zealand Police for about 14 years, 8 years of which I was a Detective investigating serious crime and working as a specialist interviewer. I then worked for a large multi-national broking firm in the insurance industry before joining MAS in 2021.
What does the Business Risk team do?
John Brans: The Business Risk team, provide good advice so that Members can make informed decisions about covering their assets and business continuity plans.
What do you do in your role?
John Brans: As a Business Risk Adviser, I speak to Members on a daily basis. I get to know their business and provide them with advice so that they can make decisions about covering their assets and closing insurance gaps or risks that may be identified. By doing this it assists them in the event of a significant loss by making sure that they can recover as quickly and seamlessly as possible.
Why is Business Insurance important?
John Brans: Business insurance is important to make sure that in the event of a significant loss or a loss, your assets are repaired or replaced as soon as they can be. Therefore, minimising the disruption to your business.
What hobbies and interest do you have outside of MAS?
John Brans: Outside of MAS I spend a lot of time with my family and I enjoy following my children and watching their sporting escapades. I enjoy the outdoors, try to keep fit and remain active. Enjoy boating. But more recently I have developed an interest in bees. I maintain 3 to 4 hives and I extract some honey from those.
