Speaker: Susan Turner, Executive Director, Terre Haute Children's Museum
Introduce yourself (your name, where you're from, what you do)
Susan Turner: Hi, my name is Susan Turner. I'm originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, but I have lived in the Wabash Valley area for more than half of my life. Um My husband and I currently live on the east side of town and I'm the Executive Director of the Children's Museum.
What part of town do you live in and what do you love about your neighborhood?
Susan Turner: My husband and our son and I live on the east side of town. Um It's a great location, it's um really close to a lot of shopping and entertainment and food. We live right next to Rose-Hulman, so um it's a really pretty part of town. Um Great access to lots of things about 10 minutes to downtown and about five minutes to I-70. Um What I really love about our neighborhood is that it's a nice mix right? Like there are families that have lived there for 30 and 40 years and there are younger families like my family who've only been there for five or 10 years. Um we have really big yards, great mature trees. Um and interestingly enough, I actually live right across the street from my mom, my dad and my aunt, so a very communal living situation. Um But I like it. Um It's it's great for my son to be so close to his grandparents right now when he's so young.
What's a must-do event or activity that remote workers should experience in their first year?
Susan Turner: There are so many great things about Terre Haute and about this region. Um, I, I love it. You know, I'm a fundraiser, my husband is a high school physics teacher. So we could literally live anywhere in the country and we choose time after time to stay here because we love it so much. Um, there's everything from farmers markets on every Saturday, two annual festivals that are so fun and the community really comes out to support them. We're located in west central Indiana. So every small town has their own festival. Um, it seems like in the spring, summer and fall. So there's something going on all the time around the area, which is really nice. But my absolute favorite um, festival is "The Miracle on 7th Street" festival, which happens the first weekend of December and they shut down downtown. There's a vendor village. There are food trucks. Um, they decorate Christmas trees. There's a huge Christmas tree in the plaza that they light up on the first night of the parade or of the festival. And then um, there's all kinds of activities going on all weekend. There's gingerbread houses and all the museums are open and the restaurants are open late, stores are open. Um so much fun. The best part is the Light Your Way Christmas parade, which happens on Saturday evening and people line the streets of downtown Terre Haute and there are probably, I don't know, 50 or 75 floats that are put together by community organizations and they're all lit up with Christmas lights. It is so much fun. It's like being in the middle of a Hallmark movie. Um I look forward to it every year. It doesn't matter what the weather is. Um If it's cold, I make my family bundle up. We're going, we're gonna grab some hot chocolate. It's just pure magic to me.
