Speaker: Jared Revlett, Public Information Officer, Owensboro Public Schools

Introduce yourself (your name, where you're from, what you do)

Jared Revlett: Hi, my name is Jared Revlett and I am from right here in Owensboro, Kentucky. I've lived a lot of different places, but Owensboro is my original home where I was born and raised. Uh, you know, I, I lived here. I went to college in Indiana and then bounced around from New York to Tennessee to Illinois to Virginia and back to Kentucky and eventually found my way back home right here in Owensboro. I am the public information officer for the Owensboro Public Schools District here in Owensboro. And that's just a fancy title for saying that I'm the public relations guy for the district. So I handle all the social media, all the tv interviews, all the newspaper interviews, photos, videos, everything that our school district puts out for our families and our communities. Um, that's what I do.

What part of town do you live in and what do you love about your neighborhood?

Jared Revlett: There are several different neighborhoods across the Owensboro community and I happened to live in the Seven Hills community and basically I'm in the Trinity Hills area of the Seven Hills neighborhood And so it's really exciting. It's my first home that I've owned myself and I was actually able to purchase my home moving back here to Owensboro. My, my mortgage was a lot cheaper than my rent was in my previous city where I lived. So it was a really unique opportunity for me to be able to, to purchase my first home here in my hometown. Uh, and it's really exciting. I've been there almost four years now. Um, so I'm really excited about that and I love where I'm at, my neighborhood is fantastic. I live kind of right on the corner of a, of a loop in my neighborhood. And so I've got a lot of neighbors nearby, most of who are quite a bit older than me, some that have been there since the homes were built in the seventies. And so, um, they're great. They keep a watchful eye on everything that's going on my back door neighbor Miss Cathy, She's awesome when we go out of town. She just keeps an eye on the house for us. We all have dogs around us. So our dogs are friends together. So, um, I love my neighborhood, my commu- community and love being able to have people over on the back patio. It's football season right now. And so sitting around watching football all day long and bringing out the smoker and just having a good time with friends and family. It's it's a wonderful atmosphere this time of year.

What's a must-do event or activity that remote workers should experience in their first year?

Jared Revlett: When most people think about Kentucky, they think the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky derby. But here in Owensboro, it's, it's the second Saturday in May, um, that's special to our community that's historically been barbecue festival weekend and they've recently re tailored some thing's um, here in town to really put an emphasis more on the backyard cooks. People like me that like to smoke meat on the weekends, watching football. So it's a really fun atmosphere to come down to the river front here in Owensboro and just walk back and forth down the main street. There's tasting samples from all of the backyard cooks in the area throughout the day. You know, you start early and they've got the things that are off quick, you know, your smoked bologna and things like that, you know, middle of the day, you walk back down the street and people have samples of barbecue chicken and things like that. And then as you get later in the day, you get the things that take a long time like that brisket and the pork, butt that takes so long to cook and it's just a fantastic day to just walk back up and down the street, learn some recipes from, from other people, just taste the good food, all of it's free for the most part, um, Pop into a few local pubs that are downtown as well. Uh, you know, in the District, there's an area downtown called the District where you're able to to grab a beverage and walk down the street as long as you're in a certain area. So it really makes for a fun, unique atmosphere. We've had friends for the past several years, um, that have come to town just to join us down on the river for the barbecue festival in the second Saturday in May. So that's definitely something that, that you need to try out when you're new to town.
