Speaker: Marifel Bermudez, Artist, Marivella Create
CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF & ORGANIZATION TO THE COMMUNITY?
Marifel Bermudez: My name is Marifel Bermudez. I am a 24 year old Filipino-American artist born and raised in the DC Metropolitan area. My art business is called Marivella Create, which is a series of handmade fibers, textile decor and custom murals. I'm originally based in Hyattsville, but my current studio is now located in Takoma Park Maryland.
WHAT IS YOUR ORGANIZATION'S UNIQUE STORY, WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT IT?
Marifel Bermudez: I always knew I wanted to exercise my creativity at a young age, whether that was through making art, designing, decorating or sewing. Growing up, I struggled with mental health disorders and mental health isn't something that you say you have or don't have, it fluctuated from day to day and moment to moment. So I found weaving especially or just fiber art especially relaxing to me Translating into my art, color has always been present in my art to communicate moods from dabbling from different materials, I understand how materials and finishes can be manipulated. And here's a big metaphor how I hold weaving to healing, to create any type of textiles. There two threads or multitude of threads that are bound to each other and that are dependent from the element before it. So nothing can be created, nothing can be created if not for what came before.
CAN YOU SPOTLIGHT THE TOP SERVICES AND PRODUCTS YOU OFFER LOCALLY?
Marifel Bermudez: So the top services I can spotlight that my business offers are one of a kind custom hand woven tapestries, paintings, murals and 3D prints, custom pieces, of course, being curated commissions or one of a kind pieces that are created by me and just added to my catalog.
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS OR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
Marifel Bermudez: My business drives for enhancement and expression through color and texture, I believe, in one of a kind pieces that transform a space, but also give you an experience. Most of that is translated through my colors and textures in my pieces, You can either choose from a crip school warm tone palette or a welcoming, warm tone palette, whatever enhances your space, or enhances your mood from your day to day basis.
WHAT DOES "SUPPORT LOCAL" OR "SHOP LOCAL" MEAN TO YOU?
Marifel Bermudez: To me, to shop local is to support your local talent around you within your community, within your family, within your friend group. I encourage you all to take the time to go through my catalog. Look at pieces that your friend would be interested in. If you see any of you would like, please feel free to purchase. Or if you see any pieces that you'd like to customize, you can always send me a reference picture and say, hey, I want this piece, but I want it in a different color palette, Feel free to reach out and thank you for listening.
