Speaker: Charlotte Beresford
Please introduce yourself and tell us what inspired you to join Learn&Co. What were your goals or dreams when you started?
Charlotte Beresford: My name is Charlotte. And two or three years ago, I got the opportunity to move to Paris. Uh Hence my decision that if I was gonna go, I really want to try and master the language and be able to interact with people out there. I've kind of always loved French, but my dream was to be able to have conversations with people and really try and understand the culture and the people. And I think you can only do that if you're interacting with people in their native tongue. Um And I didn't really have any goals of becoming business profession or being able to do presentations, but more just really trying to understand people, master normal conversations and more than anything express my own personality in a for language, which I think, you know, even if you can navigate uh basic conversation, it's really hard to get your personality across in a different language. And I know when I meet people who are not speaking their native language, the person that you meet is never quite the person that you meet in their own language. So I really want to try and unlock that through me mastering French.
Which language course or trip did you experience with us, and how has it impacted your life so far?
Charlotte Beresford: So as a result of moving to Paris, I was learning French, I must say it's impacted my life quite significantly in the sense that I think it's made me a much more creative person. Um And it's really unlocked a love for something that I didn't even know. Um I did love uh which is language. I think when learning a new language, you have to uh you don't have all the vocabulary that you have in your native tongue. So you have to learn to navigate sentences and be creative about how to put sentences together, to put your, to get your meaning across. Uh And I kind of really relish that challenge. Um And I think when you, when you manage to do so it's really satisfying. Um And I guess moreover, when you manage to get your personality across to someone in a different language or make a joke. Um Yeah, it's super satisfying. And I think that challenge and, and kind of satisfaction and the ability to build relationships in other languages. I think that's really um yeah, what I enjoy the most and what I think has been quite transformational
Could you say something in your new language?
Charlotte Beresford:
What did you love most about learning with Learn&Co? Was there a standout moment?
Charlotte Beresford: I think for me, there's been no standout moment. I have fortunately kind of loved the whole journey. Uh It's definitely frustrating at the start where you can't say anything and you can't express yourself and you feel like you can't remember anything but kind of looking back at that to where I am now and the kind of conversations that me and my teacher have. It's absolutely amazing. I can't quite believe that's happened. Um I think you forget that when you're learning a language, you're actually a lot of the time you're learning to talk about yourself, the world try and express things that you kind of don't always do in your native tongue. Um And I think managing to kind of build those conversations over a kind of a few years and see the progress and have a laugh, have a joke. Uh get my personality across has kind of all of those amalgamated to such an enjoyable journey. Um And I think also the bond kind of with my teacher. Um It's really important, you're speaking to someone a lot, you, you're actually very vulnerable. So you need to have that trust and that relationship and I think kind of the teachers at learn and co allow you to, to build that and do that, which is incredibly important.
What would you say to someone considering joining Learn&Co?”
Charlotte Beresford: What would I say to someone wanting to join, Learn&Co I would say absolutely do it. You will not regret it. Um If you're serious about mastering a language, this is absolutely the place to do it. Learn&Co's approach to language is refreshing. It's relevant. It's so far from doing kind of boring exercise in a textbook. Um Though you may have to do some of those because grammar is very important. Um It's kind of just so applicable to an everyday life that though you're learning, it doesn't feel it's never felt for me like I'm working or that it's a chore. Um And I think that's credit to the teachers and the learning style of learning co um I can't quite believe that two years ago, I couldn't say a word of French. Uh And now I'm still very far from perfect, but I'm in such a different place and I found a real love for language and I 100% have Learn&Co to thank for that.
