Speakers: Becca Roberts
Please tell us your name, where you're from and a bit about your background
Becca Roberts: My name is Becca. I'm from Liverpool and Belfast, but I now live in Cumbria in the north of England. And my background, my educational background, is English literature and performing arts. Employment wise, it's a lot more varied: I've worked in bars, cafes, shops, offices—all over the place.
What made you originally start thinking about a proofreading course or a career in freelancing?
Becca Roberts: I'd always dabbled in proofreading, correcting things for friends and family, but I only thought about it seriously as a career when the company I was working for closed down and I was left without a job. And I had the choice between getting another "for now" job or actively investing in something that I really wanted to do. And I'm very, very glad I chose the latter.
When did you decide you wanted to become a tutor?
Becca Roberts: I hadn't actually thought about being a tutor or a teacher before. Whenever the opportunity arose at Knowadays, I realised that it really appealed to me. I have a lot of experience of training and teaching people in a work setting, and I've always gotten a lot of satisfaction out of finding the right explanation or technique to suit the learner to help them understand. And it turns out, that very much carries over to my work at Knowadays.
What's your favorite part about being a Knowadays tutor?
Becca Roberts: I think my favorite part about being a Knowadays tutor is whenever I'm able to give a learner a lightbulb moment. If they ask a question and I can supply a different explanation or different examples, that means that concept is now clear and understandable for them. I still get such a kick out of it every time.
What would you say to learners thinking about taking the course?
Becca Roberts: Something I'd say to people considering taking the course would be, remember that online doesn't mean on your own. There's an entire team of people here dedicated to helping learners. So if any parts of the course are a little bit tricky, that's okay. That's what we're here for.
