Speaker: Thomas Kallenbrunnen, GARBE

1. What projects does your committee work on?

Thomas Kallenbrunnen: The Operational Real Estate Committee basically works on two things. First to properly define operational real estate in the context of an institutional real estate fund. And second to provide guidelines, best practices about how such funds with operational real estate exposure should be structured. For example, regarding fees or governance.

2. What is coming up next year?

Thomas Kallenbrunnen: It's really exciting times because the committee is in startup mode. We've just defined operational real estate not as trivial as it may sound. And now we're starting publishing, we're structuring our work and publishing the first iteration of definitions and guidelines for operating real estate in a fund context.

3. What involvement (time and effort) is required to be on your committee?

Thomas Kallenbrunnen: The more the better obviously. Joking aside, we're meeting 5-6 times a year, one or two times physically, the rest virtually or hybrid. And then we're dividing the work so that everyone contributes to at least one meaningful paper a year. So that people do the writing, do the reviewing on at least one subproject in the committee on an annual basis.
