What has working in mental health care meant to you?
Sara May: I became a nurse because I'm passionate about helping people. I have done that medically, spiritually, emotionally and through a lot of the probably darkest and most difficult times in people's lives. I've listened to a lot of unique stories about how people get where they are and, you know, what they're thinking about feeling in that moment that you meet them. So, opening my scope to that more holistic view is not only applicable in my work, but also in my own personal life. And working in mental health care has changed my perspective in a lot of different ways, helping my own personal healing at times. But really I just choose to spread more joy as often as I can. Holding out my hand to say, "You're not alone" and to help break the barrier or stigma or whatever you want to call it around depression, anxiety, addiction - it affects anyone - everyone - and there's help out there no matter what the situation is. It really just motivates me to know that I can continue learning and helping to raise awareness.
