What has working in mental health care meant to you?

Collin Bohlke, MA LPCC: Working in mental health care, to me, is a privilege. Being a therapist, to me, is a privilege. Because I get to be a part of people's lives for a short time or a long time. I get to help assist them and push them through some of those trials and tribulations that they're experiencing, and maybe some of the reasons why they're in therapy. Another part is I like to celebrate, you know, someone's successes with them too, regardless of how big or small that they are. At the end of the day, I think being a therapist, we express our humanity to clients and they express their humanity to us. And, so it's really just about caring, compassion, unconditional positive regard and believing in them when they might not necessarily believe in themselves. Once a client starts to kind of develop that self esteem and that belief in themselves again - because it was always there - that, in those moments - even though so small - those are the moments that every good therapist holds on to. Those are the reasons why we do what we do. And that's the reason why it's a privilege to be a therapist.
