Speaker: Kathryn Perry , ORT/L

Tell us about yourself.

Kathryn Perry : Hi, my name is Kathryn Perry And I am one of the occupational therapists (OTs) here with Imago Rehab. I've been a practicing OT for nearly 20 years. I am from Richmond, Virginia and some fun facts about me include: I enjoy baking and never miss an episode of The Great British Baking Show. And, I also really enjoy Ballroom dance. My husband and I actually met dancing and we really enjoy doing Swing, Salsa, and Cha-Cha

Why did you choose to focus on neurological rehab?

Kathryn Perry : I decided to focus on neurologic therapy and rehabilitation because I'm really fascinated by the brain. It controls everything that your body does and, depending on what's going on with your brain, you can have a variety of challenges and problems which makes the therapy that I provide very unique and individualized.

How do you approach your work with patients?

Kathryn Perry : My personal approach and philosophy to therapy is very holistic. It is unique, it is personalized. You're a person that has had something happen to you. And I really want to hone in on what's important to you. [Understand] what you care about and what is going to make an impact in your recovery and help you feel better.

What makes Imago better or different from other rehab services?

Kathryn Perry : I think what's different with Imago's approach to rehab is that we're able to work with you in your home environment. It is exactly the location where you are trying to do specific activities or tasks that are difficult for you. We can see you trying to do it. We can see you using the very items that you're trying to use in your home that are a challenge for you and we can customize the recovery for your location. I think it helps you not feel like that recovery is something you do in a clinic and then you come home and you wait until the next time you can get to the clinic. I think it puts you in the driver's seat and you realize that therapy is something that you have access to 24/7. And that is really unique and different.

How do you help patients achieve lasting improvement?

Kathryn Perry : I think what I offer my clients to try to help them have lasting recovery, lasting change is really, to help them change their lifestyle What I teach my clients are things they can use every day of their life in a variety of activities. A lot of the therapy that we do involves daily tasks. Things that you're doing all the time anyway. And so, really, the key to lasting recovery is finding ways for you to get high repetitions, lots of practice, having the activity be something meaningful to you that you actually care about doing. And, because the approach is happening in your own home, and using activities you do every day, often, what you see is lasting change because you're doing those tasks all the time. And so that is really exciting.
