Speaker: David Goetz

Describe one of your peak moments during the Michigan Teacher Retention Design Challenge. Why does it stand out?

David Goetz: For me, I think one of the pink moments was when, um, we went through and had different ideas going, um, brainstorming all the different ideas and, and finally narrowed it down to one specific topic that we wanted to really focus in on the idea of teacher development and we can, um, support our teachers and helping them with the classroom management. And so that was a peak area that, that I, um, I enjoyed because it's something that we didn't, I didn't think about coming into it. That would be the solution, but it came out to be one of our solutions.

Describe your team's solution idea to the teacher retention challenge in your school or district. What does success look like?

David Goetz: So our solution was to provide um district wide professional learning on um classroom management strategies to empower our teachers to um feel like they have the skills and strategies to use within the classroom to support better um instruction. And so um we will be doing that throughout our welcome back PD in the fall and then also doing um teacher labs to focus in on empowering our teachers to continue to learn and grow um through observations in each other's classrooms.

If you were going to recommend the Michigan Teacher Retention Design Challenge workshop, what would you say to encourage others to attend?

David Goetz: I would explain to others um how we were able to bring a team together. And I think it's important to have a team there. I think the value of um having teachers admin central office all there together um was really important to hear the different voices um and looking at this challenge and then um being able to come together and collaborate and share ideas, share strategies um and work through the process to narrow it down and really hone in on a specific strategy and then really come up with specific plans and actionable items to be able to then go back and implement in the district will be valuable.
