Speaker: Josh Johnson
How painful, limiting, or life impacting was your hearing loss or tinnitus before visiting our office?
Josh Johnson: Hi. Uh, my name is Josh. Uh, I, uh, recently came over to the Hearing and Brain Institute in Weatherford, Texas. Uh, before I came here I was like, any, any of the rest of us probably. I, uh, I just didn't know how bad my hearing had gotten and, you know, if you have a wife at home or a husband, they are probably the first ones to really notice. But, uh, my wife had started noticing that I was having a lot of trouble understanding her, uh, communication was off between us and honestly it was starting to affect our relationship a little bit. Uh, I, I grew up playing a lot of music and a lot of bands and, uh, shooting guns and all of the, all of the country things, uh, worked for a natural gas company for a while. Uh, 15 or 20 years and was around a lot of compressors and things that were allowed and I didn't take very good care of myself. Uh, so coming here, uh, was really an eye opening experience for me. Um, there's no, there's no hiding it when you get here. Uh, so definitely it was, um, a limiting, uh, in ways that I didn't really comprehend so. Mhm.
What are the positive changes in hearing, reduced tinnitus, improved memory, robust relationships you've experienced with treatment?
Josh Johnson: Since getting uh treatment here at the Hearing and Brain Institute, I've been really shocked about all of the things in life that I was missing out on uh various conversations. Um certain type of voices that were a little higher pitched, uh kind of fall into the tendonitis scale. And if you struggle with that, you know what I'm talking about. But uh I've had a lot of positive changes uh in my hearing, uh just, just the small things, um like, like birds and, and, and small noises that, that go on around us and it's increased my clarity, it's increased my, my social function and my cognitive function if you will. Um Because I'm not missing all of those little things that really conclusively join together to make this life that we live. And um with my wife, she, she's been very happy to understand her and, and uh I don't always understand my wife, but at least I understand what she's saying. Um The relationships are, are, are key uh very important uh to our day to day life and also to our brain function as we move forward through life and get a little bit older, um, having the ability to, to stay sharp and to, uh, to stay interactive with those around us. It really prevents, uh, a lot of this future decline in our cognitive uh development as well. And our, our uh ability to, uh stay, basically, just stay plugged in, uh, the longer we can do that, the less chance we have of having these diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's that I know that my grandfather dealt with. Um, so it's not something to take lightly. Yeah. If you're having trouble, you need to, you need to at least come by here and see, uh, to what extent that trouble is. But, uh, been very good to me and I'm very thankful.
What were your top concerns when deciding to treat your hearing loss?
Josh Johnson: My top really concerns uh with coming to get treatment. Um initially, you know, you know, you think about price and how much is this gonna cost me? And um as far as price is concerned, I can promise you, it will cost you a lot more not to do it um with deciding to, to get treatment. Uh I think men are, uh I know me personally, I won't speak for all of us, but we're great, very slow to get help when you need it. Um whether it be hearing loss or depression or anxiety or anything and all of those things tend to come along with hearing loss and uh being uh vulnerable and letting a light be shined on, on your flaws, which is not something that we're very good at. But uh fortunately, my wife, uh you know, she encouraged me to, to take this step and, and I'm just very, very grateful that she cared enough about me to get in here. And uh it, it's life changing to be able to hear again and, and be a part of this world that uh some of it was eluding me. And now I'm getting it back. Uh So I'm, I'm just very thankful and to her and to God for giving me the opportunity to, to get back something that has been lost. So.
How would you describe your treatment experience with Hearing and Brain Centers?
Josh Johnson: So my experience here at the hearing and brain center, Doctor Julie is very, very talented and she, she really cares about you when you get here. And it's easy to see that. Um it's not as bad as what you would think. You come in, you meet with her uh 01 of the other doctors even and you sit down and they get to know you a little bit. They wanna know where your struggles are. Um the things that you're concerned with uh going forward and then they put you through a just a couple hours of testing uh both for your hearing and your cognitive function. And I really like that. They do the cognitive side of it as well because uh you can kinda take your temperature on uh is my hearing loss contributing to a, an, you know, an underlying problem. Um You need to do it quickly and you need to do it um in a way that's going to be honest to yourself so that you can really see where you are. And uh once you do that, Doctor Julie is able to correct these things and put you on a path to, to get, get yourself back. Um And I'm very thankful for her for uh her constant uh care and, and, and uh just a AAA woman that, that sees me as just a human being and wants to help. Um It's never for one second been about the money here for her. Uh So you get down here if you can and, and take a step forward and that step will lead to another step and another step. And before long, you'll realize that there was nothing to be concerned with at all aside from not coming. So.
How important was Dr. Darrow's book and pre-education to your treatment journey?
Josh Johnson: When you make your appointment here uh with the Hearing and Brain Center, what you get in the in the mail is a, a book by Doctor Dro and it's kind of a pre education uh book and not something you necessarily need to just spend hours reading and researching, but basically shows you uh you know that there is hope uh for you this condition and and what to expect when you get here and what to expect moving forward. So realistic expectations uh for taking you from where you are to where you to where you want to be again. So definitely, uh look at the book and uh it really ease your mind uh and give you some, some prior education uh regarding your condition so that when you get here, uh you can understand what to expect. So.
What is the #1 thing you would tell friends or family who struggle with hearing loss/tinnitus about seeking treatment right away?
Josh Johnson: The first thing that I would probably tell a friend or a family member who was, you know, struggling with hearing loss and, and thinking about getting treatment is don't wait, um Hearing loss never gets better on its own. Uh You can't get back the damage that you caused or that has been caused. So the quicker that you get down here, the quicker, you know, you can, you can start making strides to uh to get back those things that you're missing. Now with the, with the treatment and with the uh and with your hearing aids, it's gonna be a little bit different uh than what the standard person hears. Uh It's kind of like listening to the world basically through a, through a microphone and it's, it's something that takes a little bit of time for your brain to start processing properly. Uh Doctor Julie is really good about, about making corrections and, and uh equalizing the sound. So it, it, it best suits you. Uh But the main point is that you've got to do it now, uh if you don't, um you're gonna be worse off when you finally do and there's gonna be less that they can get accomplished. So the quicker you respond to this problem though, the better off you'll be.
