How are you celebrating Women’s History Month?
Jill Porubovic: Women's History Month is an opportunity for us to be out loud on behalf of women. For many women, a solid support system wasn't modeled and they have to build their own. I call these experiences that we build from the chalkboard of life. This is an opportunity for us to build from what we learn. To build those steps and paths ahead of us and to allow women that come behind us to learn as well. Celebrating Women's History Month this year I'm going to help launch Rise North America, which promotes women in the non-craft broadcast industry. We're going to focus on mentoring and we're going to help these ladies get their groove on. The theme this year for Women's History Month is "break the bias" and there's two specific areas that I'll be focused in on. The first is for individuals who have associates degree or trade degree. And the second is for those individuals that come from neurodiverse backgrounds. Working through organizations like BroadFutures, Smoothstack and by helping local communities get engaged, I know that we can help support this demographic better. Lastly, my advice to the next generation is to be willing to do anything. One of my first jobs, I slept with a pillow in my filing cabinet and if they needed extra people, I was available. I worked double shifts. I worked overtime. I did things I wasn't comfortable with and in the meantime I learned new things and meet new people. It was a great way for me to get experience and exposure. And some of those things I carried with me forever. Ladies, if you think the cards are stacked against you, I'm here to tell you, you can just re-stack those cards. Happy Women's History Month.
