Speaker: Susan J Berch

Tell us a little about yourself. Where in Georgia are you from? What are your favorite things to do? What are some of your goals?

Susan J Berch: My name is Susan Judith Birch. I have a precious dog named Gabby. I've been working at Jewish Family and Career Services for over 30 years. My favorite things to do are listening to audio books, spending time with my friends and taking vacations. My goals are managing my money better, being more honest with my family, and using my time more efficiently.

Do you have a Direct Support Professional? If yes, tell us about the impact they have or could have in your everyday life.

Susan J Berch: I do not have a direct support professional. I used to in the past and she was a major help to me, but at this time I do not have one.

Do you have a NOW/COMP Waiver? If so, how is it helped you? If not, tell us about your experience.

Susan J Berch: I do not have a NOW/COMP waiver. I did apply for that Medicare waiver many years ago when I was denied, but I've been doing ok without it.

If you could talk to your lawmaker about these issues, what would you tell them?

Susan J Berch: If I could talk to my lawmaker, this is what I would tell them and the Medicare waiting list so people could get the waivers they need and serve. Pay more money for people with developmental disabilities above minimum wage, give people more credit than they deserve. Let them have a voice at the table. Let them make more decisions and they are able to make.

Tell us why more people with developmental disabilities should share their stories.

Susan J Berch: People with developmental disabilities should share their stories because they have so much. I have a developmental disability but that doesn't stop me from living life to my fullest potential. I live in my own condo. I work part time and I make money above minimum wage. People with disabilities are bright, smart and capable people ,and we can do anything. People with disabilities do not like to be told that they can't do something because we can do just about anything.
