What key challenges did you need help with before you started using Genio?
Patrick: Hiya, my name is Patrick and I'm a first year student of drama and creative writing at the University of Birmingham in the UK. I've been using Genio since the semester started about 6 weeks ago, as prior to coming to uni, I didn't have the software. I also have a diagnosis of autism spectrum condition which came about 10 years ago when I was 9 years old. Prior to using Genio, I would really struggle with my note taking. I found that because of my autism, it could be very overwhelming to do multiple things at once which even extended to being in the classroom and trying to take notes, listen to the teacher, and understand the topic all at once. And so because of that, my notes would often be very shallow and very limited, and my understanding would be quite poor, which would always come back to hit me in the back again later when I tried to revise.
How has Genio helped you with those challenges and impacted your learning experience?
Patrick: Now that I have Genio, I have found that my note taking skills have drastically improved. This is because in the program, there's the option to record everything that's going on and to have the slideshow present in the program, which is basically the entire skeleton of how the program functions. As such, I don't have to mark down every sentence and phrase the lecturer says and instead only need to write down the important things or the things that really stick out to me, as I can always go back later and listen to those things exactly the way the lecturer said them. It makes it a lot easier to study and it really improves the way that I work. This also makes me a lot less stressed as I'm not having to juggle all those multiple different things at once in the lesson. And also because I'm less stressed, I'm actually able to focus more at home on making my room nice. As you can see here, I have a lovely space now which I didn't used to have back at home in my old bedroom.
