What key challenges did you need help with before you started using Genio (formerly Glean)?
Lina Garcia: Hi, my name is Lina Garcia. I study at Emory University. I've had Glean since, I think September of 2024, And yeah, I use it to take notes in class, and also meeting notes when I go to office hours with professors. It helps with academic support. I got Glean through my university because of accessibility and accommodations. I have a mild neurocognitive disorder, and it just means I struggle with memory. and so, Glean has made it so I feel less stressed out. There's a professor. at my university that ends class 15 minutes early routinely, and she just goes through 60 slides in like an hour. And it's a lot of information that she says. And so, it's really helpful for that one, cause at least I write key things and I don't have to worry about getting everything and then I can recall. So it's actually been really helpful for me to be successful in terms of testing and studying, and it helps me make sure I don't miss any important information. I also like the quiz feature. It's helpful sometimes.
How has Genio (formerly Glean) helped you with those challenges and impacted your learning experience?
Lina Garcia: So, Glean really helped me with my grades last semester was the first time I successfully got all A's, in my classes, it's helped me with kind of figuring out what is the important material for me to study. it helped me kind of not feel stressed and overwhelmed while I'm taking notes. I used to be obsessively taking notes on like everything the professor says, and sometimes I would not be able to like write fast enough. So with Glean, especially with like, how I can line up what I'm writing to what's being transcribed. It has helped me with lining up PowerPoint slides. I'm just kind of making sure I don't miss anything important when things are going really quickly. Sometimes the transcribing isn't the best, but it's better than nothing. And it's definitely helped me with. Feeling more prepared for my classes and knowing what is important and what to recall. That's also really important.
Would you recommend Genio (formerly Glean) to other students?
Lina Garcia: Yeah, I would recommend glean to other students, It's really tricky. At my university, you can only use Glean because it records lectures with accommodations for accessibility. Other than that, you're not allowed to record professors lectures. So it's helpful, but you have to have the right system in place to be able to use it. I think, especially with laws around recording, it's tricky, but if like, I know anyone has a learning issue, I will tell, and they work with the office of accommodations. I suggest that they use it. I didn't even know Glean existed without the office of accommodations providing it for me. and I think if I had access to Glean maybe like 4 years ago, I would have probably been more successful in my academics, than just last semester.
