What key challenges did you need help with before you started using Genio (formerly Glean)?
Ellen Louise Faulkner: So my name is Ellen Louise Faulkner, and I currently study sports and exercise science at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. And I use Glean for all of my note taking, both during my studies and also in the society I'm part of. I'm part of a e-racing society, so we built a car and I use Glean for both my notes in lecture and for that as well. So I got Glean as part of my DSA accommodations, and it was software that I've only had it since September. Well, I had my on boarding slightly before the DSA. But I've been using it properly since September, and I will be having it for the 4 years of the length of my course. And it has been an absolute game changer in terms of saving me time, making sure my notes are accessible, because one of the big things for me in lectures is hearing and comprehension. So I am currently, I'm autistic with a sensory processing disorder and particularly part of auditory processing disorder. So in order to go back on my notes, having a transcript and the audio, and linked them together with my notes from the lecture as well, is extremely helpful because it means the bits that I can't quite process for the faster speaking lecturers in time, I can then process on my own at home and have time to let it sink in properly. It's also just really good for keeping notes organized, I think way more than the typical word processor. So yeah, it saves me so much time and it's absolutely brilliant.
How has Genio (formerly Glean) helped you with those challenges and impacted your learning experience?
Ellen Louise Faulkner: So a big thing that Glean has helped me with when it comes to my studying is my grades. So whilst I was doing well academically in my previous courses, I think it has been a few years since I was last in education, I did pretty well at that, but I always felt that there was more information I could retain and more information that I could understand to then synthesize and put forward into my assignments. And I have received some of the highest marks in my cohort in the semester one marks that were released actually only yesterday, and I would not have done that if it wasn't for the ease of information that Glean has given me. It also significantly helped me with my study/life balance and work/life balance because everything is where it needs to be. I can understand my notes. It transcribes the second that I finish the lecture. I don't have to spend any time doing that. It just, I click the button and it automatically does for me the outline and the transcription, which is a game changer. Because previously to using Glean, I was just using voice recorder on my phone and then trying to pick out the bits I wanted from that, which wasn't the best. And so it massively helps with that understanding and the time saving. And it definitely helps with my stress levels because it means that everything I've got is easy to go through and therefore able to use my time far more efficiently studying, and therefore my stress goes down because I'm not having to try and cram everything in at the last minute or in one go. I can do assignments as I go through because I've got the information there as I go through. And I think one of the biggest things to help me with that is the AI outline. The AI outline is brilliant, just finding what I need, picking out the bits and retaining all the information.
Would you recommend Genio (formerly Glean) to other students?
Ellen Louise Faulkner: So I would absolutely recommend Glean to all the students. In fact, I already have. There's a couple of students, so I got it through DSA and I think a couple of other students on my course have got it through DSA and those of us who have it, we've already spoken with each other and said how fantastic we find it. And I have recommended it to actually some of my friends already, and one person I recommended it to was one of my lecturers, who is a leading academic in his field, and he was talking about retaining information from when he goes to conferences and these other people's work. And I mentioned how Glean for me has been a game changer in one of my tutorials with him, and he is now investigating using Glean for himself. So yes, I absolutely would recommend Glean, and I already have.
