Speaker: DeNarae Stewart, Student at San José State University
What key challenges did you need help with before you started using Genio (formerly Glean)?
DeNarae Stewart: Hello everybody. My name is DeNarae. I am a graduate student at SJSU studying environmental sciences, and I've had Glean for about 2 to 3 years now. I was able to get access to it through my school's accessibility department because I am diagnosed with ADHD. And so one of the things that really stood out to me about Glean, so we did get to choose from a bunch of different ones, and Glean stood out to me because I personally struggle with keeping up with audio input while also taking physical, so like writing notes and such. And so my biggest struggle was actually remembering what was being said during classes and such as I was just noting all the time and not really engaging in what was being said because I was just doing my best to keep up with what was being given overall. And so I really wanted Glean to be able to help me with that, and that is actually what it's doing.
How has Genio (formerly Glean) helped you with those challenges and impacted your learning experience?
DeNarae Stewart: So I would say Glean really did, like immediately had an impact on, at least my psyche when it came to taking notes. I feel like I've always really had pretty good grades, And I continued to keep them, but the whole psychological aspect of trying to maintain those grades, was severely impacted in a good way, in a positive way. And so, I no longer feel the stress of trying to keep up with classes and courses, especially like in person or online, just being able to feel confident that the notes I'm taking are going to be easily referenceable, whenever I'm studying has been super helpful. So as I'm going through, being able to, even go back in the audio and like adjust and edit certain notes, here and there as I'm relistening to it, so that I can have a better line up with what's being said and then being able to better, basically transfer that knowledge to my take on what's being said, has been monumental in how I handle a lot of my coursework now. It's definitely been great, and it's definitely reduced the amount of time I feel like I have to spend studying overall, and I love that.
Would you recommend Genio (formerly Glean) to other students?
DeNarae Stewart: So I would 100% recommend Glean to other students. I already do. Both at school, during my courses with my lab partners, during projects, and then also at work, my co-workers and any meetings that we have, I also let them know that, hey, do you mind if I use this specific software to record the meeting just because it allows me to take notes to keep up with it. So I'm already recommending Glean to everyone I know, as much as possible actually. And honestly, if I really hope it can become more accessible, and I hope it gets pushed more in schools as a tool that students should and can use because it really does make a difference in your belief system of how good of a student you are because not everyone is built the same to take notes the same, to learn the same, to remember the same. And so having something like this is, is honestly groundbreaking, and I think it's an important tool that should be pushed a lot more in schools, and just be available for, for students who need something like this, because it really does make quite a difference, right?
