Taylor Campion (she/her): Hi, my name is Taylor Campion, and I'm the senior managing attorney of FVAP's housing program. I'm thrilled to introduce former Senator Susan Eggman as FVAP's Advocacy Champion of the Year. I have had the pleasure of co-sponsoring two housing bills with former Senator Eggman: 2022's SB 1017, which transformed eviction protections for survivors of domestic violence and survivors of other types of abuse and violence, and 2024's SB 1051, which opened access to California's locks change laws to many more survivors and helped ensure survivors of abuse and violence are not discriminated against when looking for rental housing. Both bills will have a lasting impact on survivors throughout California, and I'm certain they would not have happened without Senator Eggman's unwavering support and advocacy. In 2021, when we first approached former Senator Eggman with a potential bill which would overhaul eviction protections for survivors, we made no secret of the fact that the bill would face significant opposition. However, Senator Eggman did not back away from the challenge. Instead, she leaned in. When we would tell her about how opposition wanted us to change parts of the bill, but doing so would make it easier to evict survivors of abuse, she did not ask us to compromise or find another way. She trusted our expertise and zealously advocated for our position. As a result, she authored a bill that changed the eviction landscape for survivors, providing survivors in California with one of the strongest eviction protections in the country.
Taylor Campion: The former senator was not only an amazing advocate for survivors but also a pleasure to work with. She was kind, thoughtful, and personable. I have nothing but positive things to say about my experiences working with former Senator Eggman. Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to introduce former Senator Susan Eggman, a passionate advocate for survivors, all-around champion, and FVAP's Advocacy Champion of the Year. Thank you.
Susan Eggman
for her advocacy in protecting survivors from eviction
Former Senator Susan Eggman: Hi, hello, everybody. I just want to express my heartfelt thanks for being recognized as the champion of the Family Violence Appellate Project.
Former Senator Susan Eggman: It's been my honor to work with the organization, the advocacy that you do about taking care of those who, who are most on the margins and make sure that they're able to maintain their rights, and housing. Housing is so so foundational to getting back on your feet and everything that goes along with that for families, for kids, for women, for stability purposes. So anyway, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I look forward to doing more work together.
