ESO - Stroke Unit and Stroke Centre Certification
What made you consider applying for ESO Stroke Unit / Centre Certification?
Dr. med. Paula Janssen: We were proud of the quality of patient care at our stroke centre. By comparing our centre with the standards and benchmarks that were set by the European Stroke Organisation, we were able to show our clinical team the strength of our stroke centre, but we were also able to detect possibilities for further improvement. In other words, we used the application to quantify our quality of patient care.
Was the certification process difficult at any stage?
We experienced the application process as straightforward. It consisted of a list of questions that had to be answered. Requested documents could be easily uploaded to the website.
What would you recommend to centres considering certification?
I would recommend all stroke units and stroke centres to apply for ESO certification. I would like to challenge all centres to compare themselves with the ESO standards to continue improving the quality of stroke care and to try to reward your centre with the achievement of the ESO certification.
What benefits did you notice following certification?
The largest benefit was to share this achievement with our entire stroke team. Our stroke centre is formed by the collaboration of many team members from different departments. And by working together as a team, we achieve the high quality of stroke care. Furthermore, with the ESO certification, we were able to show our patients and their families that they can expect excellent stroke care.
