Speaker: Kate Tovsen, Society of Working Moms

Before you joined the Ember Community, what were some common problems you experienced and how did you handle them?

Kate Tovsen: So, before I joined the Ember community, I was quite lonely, and the irony is that, of course, you create a community so that you are solving that problem for others. And I did that for myself in this one context, but then I didn't have anywhere to go to talk about the loneliness that is inherent in building and managing a community. Um, so how I would solve that before is I would kind of informally meet with other community builders, um, just connecting with them one on one, which is also very valuable, but I never felt like there was like a meaningful. Permanence to those sorts of connections and like problem solving together. So, I, being a community-minded person, wanted to create my own community to solve for this and um As any community manager or builder knows, it's, it's a lot of work and so. I have found that the ember community is well worth the price for Bree's expert management and thoughtful curation of um events and offerings and just like a gold mine of content from her own knowledge, but then also um the value of having other people who are one step ahead, one step behind in their community building journey.

Now as a member with Ember, what's different?

Kate Tovsen: So, now what's different as a member of the Ember community is I have this built-in space where I can go with a community conundrum to borrow Bree's language from her excellent Dear Bree podcast. Um, so if I'm having a challenge in my community or something I want to celebrate my community, but it might be weird to post it inside the community. Um, I have this place with other people who get it, um, where I can just share that and be celebrated or supported or, you know, everything in between. So it's, uh, yeah, I, I could not be doing what I'm doing without the support of Bree and the other members of the Ember community.

How has that translated to your community? Are there any specific successes you'd like to share about?

Kate Tovsen: I can say confidently that every week inside the Ember community, I'm, I'm coming away with like nuggets of information and valuable things that I can put into action in my own community. So maybe it's some other member who's saying, Um, oh, I'm switching my membership, like pricing structure, and here's why, and here's how I'm communicating it, or, uh, like an external speaker who's talking about automation or website landing pages, or DIY marketing, there's always something to be gleaned from the community, and I think what Bree does so well and which really sets up the community like tone. Is she really emphasizes this growth mindset and this idea that we're all learning together, and she models that herself, which I really appreciate, um, because this community is like a test in, in and of itself, where she's getting to like, put what she preaches into practice and iterate and help us iterate in our own communities.
