Speaker: Cathy Foley, Australia's Chief Scientist
Cathy Foley: Hello Charlie and hello everyone who's competing for the title of National Science Quiz Champion. My name is Cathy Foley, and I'm Australia's chief scientist. As Australia is an island continent, my question relates to our marine environment, but with a physics bent. Here it comes. When a ship moves across the ocean, its hull and propeller create turbulence, forming a weight behind the ship. We see it as a V shaped trail of turbulence with an intense cloud of bubbles. What other physical property could we detect from the ship's wake using remote sensing and how is it measured?
