Speaker: Betsy Butler, Course Creator
What do you hope teachers will take away from this course?
Betsy Butler: Hi, I'm Betsy Butler and I'm the course creator of course 731: Mindsets Matter. And this course is focused all on growth and fixed mindsets and really encourages ways for teachers to understand how that applies in the classroom. So specific strategies on learning tasks and also some formative assessment ideas along with just a general knowledge and understanding of the importance of these mindsets. And to make sure that even as things become more difficult, and as you move through school, you certainly can approach those with a growth mindset and be able to have better success simply by understanding that you're learning and that mistakes are ok.
What do you love about this course?
Betsy Butler: What I love about this course is that it turns Carol Dweck's work on mindsets into something that actually is quite vulnerable. To have a growth mindset and to continue to make mistakes and to, then to celebrate your mistakes is an extremely brave and vulnerable thing to do. And I hope that teachers can see ways in this course that they can help students do just that as they continue to make mistakes and trial and error over and over again, that indeed it is a benefit and it's worth it when you finally do learn, how to do a thing that you've been trying and not quite getting it right. I think it's a very vulnerable place to be and I think we should celebrate not just mistakes but the ability to continue to reflect on them.
